Journey to disaster ... helicopter tows moose |
|
|
|
THREE people died when a helicopter used to airlift moose to safety hit a pylon cable and crashed into a reservoir.
The pilot, a passenger and a wildlife photographer on board all perished as the chopper flipped upside down and hit the frozen lake.
|
No hope ... the crash scene |
A colleague on the ground tried in vain to save them. The chopper was flying the animals away from a main road near Salt Lake City, Utah, where six had recently been killed by cars. Wildlife workers drop a net on the moose from the air, then tie up the animals and blindfold them. The moose are flown, one by one, to a truck and driven to a remote area. |

Moose bergers ?

What a shame. 3 human lives are more important than some wild animal. I was in Miami and saw a report on TV about an attempted alligator "removal" - three LEOs had roped the thing and it was thrashing around - I thought "It's an alligator! Shoot the thing and make some belts!"

I thought "It's an alligator! Shoot the thing and make some belts!"You know what your problem is?
You have a brain and common sense. You are an anachronism.
Remember some years ago in Washington, when a beaver couple were toppling the Japanese Cherry Trees (a gift from the pre WWII Japanese) along the Potomac? There was a giant hoopla about humanely capturing these giant rats and releasing them somewhere else, where, of course, they would devastate another innocent party's property.
My reaction to that problem was the same as yours to this one, and they would make great hats!

What an incredible waste of human lives and money.

When we get deep snow, its not uncommon to have 300-400 moose killed by cars over the winter in our borough. I've cut a couple throats and loaded them into trk over the years, of moose that were hit along side of road. They tend to bunch up in certain areas and if the idiots would only slow down and watch, they wouldn't hit them in the first place. Moose alert signs seem to help, but I'll tell ya one thing, if you slam a moose at 75, your chances not too good either.

About 20 years ago my then soon to be wife and I were travelling at night from Franklin, VA to Richmond, VA. I had a company car, a big one, Mercury Marquis, and I hit a deer with the impact being on the left front of the car. We were going around 50-60, I would guess. The force of the hit was such that it moved the left side panels rearward so much that it jammed both the front and rear doors closed.
After our heart rates got down to about 200, we got and looked for the deer, but couldn't find him.
If a deer could do that, I cannot imagine what a moose would do. Do they bound out into the roadway like deer? If they do, I would think that the car and occupants would be the losers every time.

How could you possibly say, "Shoot the thing"? in our society today. Do you realize what you have said and the damage that could result from your statement?
The EPA or ESA will expect your attendance at your local environmental class "Learning What is Important in Todays World ".
You will be expected to bring all necessary items to learn this class at your own expense. Upon graduation of this class you will be required to make substantial weekly donations to the national headquarters to seek and educate unsavory idiots such as yourself.
When you have attended 24 monthly classes your title will change to Evironmental Beginner, after 48 classes Evironmental Graduate, after 96 classes Evironmental Lover and after 192 classes you will be qualified to become an Ambassador of our Evironmental Group which uses the tax funds of the foolish American citizen to do whatever we want with their money.
You will promote the use of taxpayer funds for the protection of all insects, fish, mammals or plant at every possible moment throughout the rest of your life.
Is this fully understood? If so, sign the attached page, enclosed $400.00 and mail to the above address.

Actually, they cross in certain areas, and I have 200 watt PIAA's on my cow catcher, so I see them 1/4 mile away. I've seen them run out oblivious to the world and also stand a wait for traffic; but they spin around just the same when hit, just slower. Or it looks slow motion watchin it happen to another driver, ha. They total vehicles and kill people.
I was up fairbanks once and one of my local (pet cows) got nailed on the bend below cabin. Idiot Anchorage city people luv to race back and forth between the city and mnts every chance they get, as fast as they can travel. Anyway, the wife and 7 year old tried catchin the calf so we could bottle feed, but they couldn't. By the time I got home nx day a bear had homed in on the dinner call and no calf.
They ought to start taxin the people for hittin moose, maybe that would slow them down some; say it aint so, a tax I'd support.

Something just occurred to me. Do your woods border the roads? That's what causes the accidents here. The woods are right up to the shoulder of the road, so one has cannot see what is about to happen.
You drive along, and in a flash, the deer is there in front of you, so there is no time to react.

I second those thoughts on deer! My son & his wife borrowed our Subaru station wagon and a deer ran into them and spun them around. Broken windshield, side mirror, tail-light and dents all over. After sending them spinning, the da#* thing ran into the car again, then ran off. And the bleeding hearts in our area are trying to ban deer hunting. They must live in cities. Anyway, a moose would be a devastating impact. Why endanger human lives trying to move moose? Stupidity! *sigh* Shoot them and feed the needy.
