Still, quick question: what if the kid turned out to be a member of a "Christian Fundamentalist"
nut group and a few more of them pulled the same trick over the next week ...would you then support
the FBI's profiling all Christian Fundamentalists as potential terrorists (which they already do)?
Would it be ok to attack CF's and their support of Old Testament teachings?
What about other religions that believe in Old Testament laws/prophecies, such as Jews?

It seems that it is common practice to have students do thier OWN pre-flight checks, un-supervised, so this was a piece of cake.

That's right.
As long as you keep in mind that "people" means "individuals". Not groups.

I, for one, do not want to be judged -or held accountable- for clinton's bombing of Yugoslavia, or the CIA's excesses, or any number of other examples. Which is exactly what these Islamic fundamentalists want to do. They point at those things, they point at Hollywood, they point at pop culture and say "this is America, we have to fight it". But when they pulled the 9/11 atrocity, they were not attacking what they were pointing at. When people point at Islam and say "all who practice this religion should be judged by those terrorists", then they are doing exactly the same as the Islamic minority that support killing innocents in the name of punishing the group, they are targeting the group for the actions of the individuals.
In this country, that is not how justice is supposed to be served.

Fire a rifle supervised? 6-8. Unsupervised but alone? 8-10. With other kids but no adults? Around 14. Handguns supervised? 10 or so. Unsupervised? At least 16. I have no problem, for instance, with a friend who hunts here whose little girl of about eight goes hunting with him with her doll in one hand and her .22 in the other. Some people might find that a little jarring but I have no problem with it if its supervised.

Ride a horse supervised? Any age the parents decide. I think they should be 4 or 5 myself. I woouldn't let a kid under eight ride my fairly gentle geldings outside a small closed horse pasture alone. But I'd let them into open pasture at ten if I was sure they were strong enough to use the reins to control the horse if he was spooked.

Haybalers and combines, any PTO equipment actually, are always dangerous because people won't obey safety precautions. I have a list of things I simply will not do when operating such equipment. Ever. Just look at the number of farmers killed or missing body parts and anyone can readily conclude the equipment is dangerous. It might be that it's even more dangerous to adults who become casual about the dangers, maybe more so than to a kid whose ears are full of mama's warning and dad's horror stories. I think most farm people will let a kid run haying equipment or combines pretty young. I started at ten and drove pickups on private property at seven. Some folks start their kids earlier than that. And some of them have those tragic little funerals too. The ones with closed caskets. Most of those families finally understand the value of safety. Kind of like how they finally understand that it's not too smart to keep a vicious dog after it rips a child's face off.

I also don't like to have people around who show the least carelessness with guns. Like ever pointing the barrel of any gun, even empty, at anyone's body. A lot of funerals are caused by "empty" guns.

My own standards and ideas balance risk to the individual with the potential to harm others. Driving and flying in urban areas is inherently dangerous to others. When they wreck (and even good older drivers do), they often kill or maim innocent people. Statistically, it's clear that it is sheer inexperience and lack of mental preparedness which causes these things. If these kids only offed themselves, I wouldn't care quite so much. But they kill and maim others. In truth, the lapse of judgment on the part of parents isn't much different than that of drinking and driving, another habit I ogreously oppose for safety reasons. But I would approve of it on private property. In fact, I'd like all the drinking drivers to fill up on alcohol and have a stretch of private road where they can drive just as fast as they want. It would be a public service to provide that for them, I think. And I'm just liberal enough I'd approve of using taxpayer funds for it.

Sensible people do. Fortunately, they out-live and out-breed your kind. It's called natural selection. As I said, I don't object much to people taking chances with themselves or their own kids. Unfortunately, people like you tend to take some of the rest of us with you in your little accidents.
