OK - so maybe I worried too much that your interest was in increasing the age that kids can learn to fly over this incident?

Nope. No letters to my congressman. Like that would do any good with that worthless socialist-in-Republican-drag anyway. (Ummm...did I mention that I didn't vote for him?) I simply have my own opinions on these age-of-majority issues, not an agenda to legislate. In general, I'm willing to let parents decide all these issues unless, as with guns/cars/airplanes, that poor judgment could result in many deaths. Especially mine. I'm probably in much more danger from 10-12 year old kids being allowed to drive 50-60mph alone on county roads by their parents or stupid city hunters with unsafe gun handling habits when you get right down to it. And I don't even call the sheriff on them. But then in a rural area, we license all of them that want to to get school permits at fourteen. Then you see the fourteen year olds driving the county roads at 60-70mph at all hours. Thankfully, accidents are rare. Mostly because of low population density. You really couldn't let fourteen-year-olds drive in a major city. The statistics would show it was a really bad idea. Where I live, more kids are killed or put in wheelchairs by rodeo or football or farm machinery than in car accidents in the last decade. But then, that's just us.

Maybe those examples kind of highlight how hard it is to make standards for such a large and diverse country. No standard can be absolutely perfect.

Listening to the NTSB - AF press conference right now... I am glad, in hindsight, that we did not have time to shoot this one down. I think, finding out that it was a kid, and not knowing what the kid's intentions would have been, it would have been a policy distaster.

Do I hope we go after the next one? - Certainly. But I think missing this one was the best outcome. We don't need a perceived mistake to start strangling the military in these times.

If dogs begin starting fires in crowded buildings, don't you think it might make sense to ban dogs with matches and lighters from crowded buildings?

This is a job the military would probably prefer to duck. Personally, I'd prefer to have a civilian make the decisions, preferably at a national air traffic center, in order to keep the chain of command strictly civilian when dealing with civilian aircraft. It is essentially a civilian security problem. We should keep generals out of it. If we have to shoot one down, let the FAA or a subsidiary of it take the heat for the decision. This will protect the military from criticism if a shootdown is ordered.

Well, yeah, you're right. I remember my trips by car on the Crosstown. Seems far from MacDill to downtown that way. For all I know, this kid flew over my neighborhood if he went from St. Pete Clwtr Airport to MacDill.

I think it was suicide - maybe a copycatter but no connection to the main terrorist networks. He obviously knew on a clear day that he was flying into a building.

Whatever you're using, I recommend that you cut back a bit. First it's pyromaniac dogs, then pretty soon you will be seeing pink elephants wearing tu-tus.

We're all still waiting for the facts to support your hysteria, Rosie.

Once again I ask you, "How many people have been killed by general aviation airplanes falling out of the sky on them?"

Once again I ask you, "How many people have been killed by general aviation airplanes falling out of the sky on them?"

Your comments lead me to believe that there is no number that would lead you to restrict access. What is virtually certain is that over the course of the next two years, there will be restrictions placed on flight training. As far as crashes of light planes, one can find many stories of private planes crashed into homes in urban areas but I don't know how many have killed anyone. I've even seen pictures of a few from which the pilot walked away unharmed. House was, of course, virtually destroyed but someone like you considers the property of others insignificant, I would guess. One can, of course, find far more stories about commercial aircraft killing bystanders when they crash. Lockerbie comes to mind but there are others as well.

However, you are free to rant on. You'll probably shortly see some noise in aviation circles to enact some restrictions on youth piloting. I'll sit back and see how you fare with the soccer moms and the FAA and Congress. I would expect they'll consider restrictions but a single incident may be disregarded. As I pointed out earlier, they've raised the age of flight before. I was told that there was opposition to that as well. But then, there have been enough crashes with child pilots involved that no one listens to fanatics. What was that one with the little girl (seven or eight) who was trying for a new cross-country age record, took off in bad weather and killed herself and her father and her flight instructor? Seems they enacted some new regulations after that one, didn't they? It's been...well...probably 15 years since that one. As I recall, they tried to pretend that one of the adults was at the controls although that would indicate they were trying to get their Guiness record by sham. But then, you can balance those with a man I know who became a pilot even though he is mildly retarded. But I don't think he flies any more. Our local standards are fairly lax. For instance, around here, a person with pretty severe Downs' syndrome can get a drivers' license but I think it's restricted to disallow driving in metropolitan areas.

Ah, Miss Payne. I see you are back to attack everything Conservative and American again.

-- Ah yes Ms Milo, - I can only see that anyone who makes fun of your bizarro post is virtually accused of treason.

If it turns out to be a nutty kid, I will have been wrong, and will so publically state. If on the other hand it was an Islamic Fundamentalist.... well then....

Two bits you will never eat your words. You will find SOME way to justify your idiocy. - You always have. - 63 - Tpaine

----------------------------------

Homeland Security in DC saying NOT TERRORIST RELATED. I was wrong on coincidence. Apploigize to Arabs, but wonder of owner wants to retract his statement to effect that increased security must not PO the Arabs. - 75 - MB26

Ah yes, -- You were wrong on a LOT more than 'coincidence'. - And, -- you have tried to justify this threads idiocies more than once since your rather incoherant, qualified effort to 'apploigize to arabs', above. --
-- While you ignored all those who so rightly chastized your pitiful overreaction.

When you first came to FR you claimed to be some sort of reporter/media savvy type. -- Whatta joke.
-- As has been pointed out to you on this thread & elsewhere, -- the net effect of clownish behaviour like yours makes FR look a bit too much like a circus.

You might try thinking next time, before you post such trash.

He'll probably get to vote for them again in '02 and '04, if the RATS control any local election boards.

Please, we all realize what you are, a far-leftist who hates everything American. As far as pilot being pro-Arab, I might suggest you read latest posts about pilot's love for a certain Mr. Bin Lagen.

Hunches have a way of turning out sometines......

Too bad you weren't around to condem the attacks on WTC and DOD a few months ago....

Hey! You didn't just show up here to gloat over being right all along, did you? I'd really hate that.

Actually, I was sort of enjoying that your terrorist-detector turned out to be right after all the flack you took on this thread. Especially considering how WRONG some of these losers are who called you such nasty names.

Someone flagged them all to point out you were right over on that newer thread. I'm thinking not one of 'em will show up to admit you were right to suspect terrorism. And I think they're all going to disappear and suddenly develop an interest in other topics. Wild horses won't be able to drag them back here.

Looking back over her post, I'm thinking that Miss Paine doesn't bother to read the news before she comments on it.

-- Insane accusation. - One of your first posts to me here, when you were a newbie, accused me of being a communist. At one point you were about to expose a whole nest of commies right here at FR! --- Result? - Nada. - BS.

As far as pilot being pro-Arab, I might suggest you read latest posts about pilot's love for a certain Mr. Bin Lagen.

I've read the speculation, where's the love note? Whats it say? You report, I'll decide.

What makes you think I didn't, except for your delusions? --- Get some new rants. Your old schtick wears thin.

Thank you. The old news nose just started twitching a bit... and this time, it worked out. A few years ago, someone caught her posting support for the North and South Carolina recruiter for the Communist Party of the USA and she hasn't been around that much since.

Thought she might have been the alter ego for one of the Baldwin Brothers and moved out of the US when you (?) were elected, but apparently, no such luck.

Oh well.

Have a great week.
