I figured out who the perp was when you mentioned it a few months ago, but refused to reveal the name. That is why I flagged you. :)

You might be right about the Columbus metro area (I am not sure, but certainly the GOP numbers in Franklin County have deteriorated), but the eroding GOP margins in Cinnanati (Hamilton County) are misleading because the suburban counties are filling up with people (Warren, Butler and Clermont Counties), and very heavily GOP. The metro Cincinnati area is as GOP as ever (although a bit of it spills over into Indiana now, as well as of course Kentucky. But yes, Bush was saved in Ohio by a splendid showing in rural counties, particularly in the Butternut area, where he improved over Dole by about 16%. Also, my vague impression is that Dem margins in the Cleveland metro area have stagnated.

Isn't Columbus John Kasich country?

As for Toledo, the history behind that was that Michigan and Ohio fought a small war over Toledo. We won that war and Ohio was forced to keep Toledo..:D.

The Rats use the race card in most every contest. The Pubs must beat the Rats at this game by using the reparations issue.

Double good news, I think I just got moved from Tony Halls to Republican John Boehner's district and there will be a viable candidate to oppose Tony Hall. Most of the people around here who are Dems don't seem to be all that impressed with Tony Hall. They grip that he pays little attention to Dayton and is more interested in World hunger. Seems to me the only time he makes news is when he is in some Third World country to promote an end to hunger. Libby

The Dayton Daily News is the flagship publication of the Cox newspaper chain. Democrat presidential candidate James M. Cox (1920) came from Dayton. For years, Dayton, OH, has been as synonymous with the Democrat party as Atlanta, GA, the home of the other Cox paper, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. It's hard to imagine a Republican representing Dayton in Congress. Let's hope this happens.

Does anybody know if the new leader for the GOP, his name I think is Racicot is Pro-Gun? Is he a strong patriotic conservative? If the party leader is pro-gun we will have a better chance at electing progun congress-critters.

Last I read, that long skinny district along the Ohio River was going to pit Traficant against Strickland, meaning one less democrap incumbent. Anyone know if that has changed?

Also read that the GOP caved on Sherrod Brown, my crummy liberal scumbag rep, because they wanted to keep him from runnng for governor.

Don't know why they were worried about him, he has little name recognition outside his district, but in any event, he has said that since his district is safe he will stay in the race for Congress.

The one major change in Ohio in the last 10 years is Columbus is now a Democratic town. Most Ohio population centers including Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo are Democrat towns. It used to be that Columbus and Cincinnati could almost balance Cleveland and Toledo... but no more.

Gore came within 3 points of winning Ohio. I think Gore's decision to drop out of Ohio 3 weeks before the election cost him the presidency more than Florida did.

But Dickie Gephardt is not going to be speaker. The Gerrymandering is not what it used to be, but the net result is a Republican advantage this cycle. They will hold the house.

Though likely not as much as his losses in AlGore's home state, county, and precinct, which if he had won would have made a victory in Florida unneeded by him. Those of us who worked particularly hard to see that happen, though many were not Republicans and no particular fans of George Bush, knew the damage that Gore would cause if elected would be at least as bad, and probably worse, than the results of a Bush victory.

Our initial hope was to see Gore suffer enough of a humiliating defeat in his home state that it would lessen his momentum in the West Coast voting still going on as the Tennessee results were announced. The Florida close call was not a situation that had been expected, but the damage done to Gore's political currency in his home state may at least also help to forestall any serious thought of running him as a candidate again.

But you're certainly right about Ohio's electoral votes being a critical factor- just as they were in 1948 when it was the final recount of votes from that state that put Truman over the top in his close-call race against Thomas Dewey, which the Chicago Tribune, among others, called the wrong way.

Of all the Democrats in Congress, I think I would be saddest to see Tony Hall go. He is a rarity in politics today--a sincere Christian who puts his faith over his Party allegiance. There was a great article about him in Christianity Today back in 1997, called "The Hungry Congressman." It's available online here.

There have been rumors that Rep. Hall of Ohio might very well get a job as head of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization.

Reportedly, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan wants him for the job because of his 'humanitarian' trips to North Korea.

Definately! Racicot (pronounced Roscoe) is from Montana. Even Hippies are pro-2A in Montana! :)) He got re-elected in 1996 with 81% of the vote, to boot. Of course, his competitor (Chet Baylock) died on the way to a debate and the running mate of Baylock was unimpressive, but still!

The efforts of the Ohio labor unions both Auto workers and AFL in 2,000 were the most intense of my lifetime.

If you used the turnout numbers of previous races, to calculate the results from the polling data it was 5 to 7 point Bush win in Ohio. But if you took the actual turn out and used the same raw poll numbers to calculate the race it was a 3 point race. The poll numbers were off in much of the nation because they used the wrong turnout percentages. Everywhere the turn outs were up for democrats you could see labor's handy work. Pollsters in the future may find a more accurate way to predict turn out than past history. This time that method proved inadequate to accurately predict the result.

I am not at all certain that the turn out in Democratic precincts in 2002 and 2004 will come close to what they were in 2000. I do know that labor kept telling Gore what they were doing and Gore's people did not believe them. I am not at all sure that labor will make the huge effort to elect Democrats this year or in 2004 that it did in 2000. Bush has already pealed off the Teamsters from the labor coalition. He will peal off a lot of rank and file as the days wear on. This years election will tell us a lot.

The power structure of the Democratic party does not blame Clinton for the 2,000 loss. They place the fault for the loss clearly on Gore's door step. They believe that if they had run an even slightly better candidate than Gore, that Candidate would have won.

Who gets the nomination in 2004 will tell a lot. I don't think Hillary is a threat. She is no Bill Clinton. Just as Teddy was no JFK. Look for some future Jimmy Carter to whip Hillary's butt. This fall will be a very important election.

I hope the right efforts are made to pull it off.

A safe GOP seat has moved into the tossup column per the redistricting is what those numbers mean.
