Going to Washington DC tommorrow (Wed 23)
Me, and my job | Paradox

Posted on 01/22/2002 9:49:28 AM PST by Paradox

My job (evihl federal employee) is sending me to DC for a couple of days, and one evening (Wednesday the 23rd). I'm arriving at 9:30 @ Reagan, I dont have to go to "work" till 1:00 pm, then I am free after 5:00. Is there anything interesting going on there tommorrow evening? No one to freep or hassle? I haven't been there in 12 years, any suggestions as to what to check out (Korean war memorial was suggested)? Are they allowing any visits to the Pentagon, or areas where I could see some damage? (not because I am a sicko, I would just like to see first hand some of what we are fighting about!).

Thanks for any suggestions.

I love the outside spaces and vistas there. Get a warm coat and good shoes.

I once got a metro pass and tried to see as much as I could in six hours....it was amazing how much ground I covered. Arlington on a brisk day would be wonderfully uplifting.

No protests that I know about. There is a hill where the DC Chapter of FR goes every Sat. It is on Army-Navy Drive. That will give you a good view of the damage to the pentagon.

IMHO, one can't visit the Pentagon and not be changed. There is nothing like seeing the damage in person, even though reconstruction is making inroads on the damage. But, the hole is still there.

It is also wonderful to see the White House and think/pray for our President and First Lady who have indeed brought diginity and honor back to the office and the "People's House".

I never tire of seeing the Monuments, and I've lived here over 25 years now. If you're not into monumnets, there're always the National Archives, the fantastic museums, etc.

Perhaps some of the folks I've pinged will have other ideas for you. Good luck, and welcome to DC - for a day.

Well, today there's a big anti-abortion rally. Something to do with the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

My advice. Hit the Metro (subway) -- stop off at Metro Center and see the Whitehouse. Maybe hit the M&S grill (13th and F) for lunch. Good food, lots of it -- relatively cheap.

Also stop by Capital Heights and see the congresscritters

Great suggestion. My favorite is the Museum of Natural History, next the Smithsonian

After I hit the "submit" button, I realized that you were talking about Wednesday. Sorry, somehow I lost a day this week. There's a huge Pro-Life parade planned for Wednesday, in protest of Roe v Wade. This will make travel on the streets pretty difficult. Depending on your views, you might want to join in. If not, stick to the subways.

Ford's Theatre and house across the street where Lincoln died and you see the bed he died on.

You can run into many museums and see their highlights....Old Glory....Magna Carta...Gutenburg Bible....Hope diamond..dart in and ask where these treasures are....don't waste time looking at everything.

Nighttime MUSTS.....the Monuments at night are breathtaking!! The Capitol at night is wesome....when the dome light is on (they are in session) and you can go in.....eat at The Ebbitt Grill!!! Very reasonable and fun!!

If it were spring or summer I would tell you to bring your kayak. We have some great white water. It's a bit dangerous though.

12 years, eh?

You should try to see the Newseum in Rosslyn. Quite the place. Wiil close in March because they are going to build a new one at 7th and Pa. Ave. But that will be a 2-3 year project. Metro is the way to go and it's an easy hop to the Pentagon from there.

Union Station has really changed in the last 12 years.

Even if you don't care about plants, the Botanical Gardens just reopened after a 3 year renovation and it is great..and free.

Back over on Pa Ave you should peek in the Reagan Building and next to it the Old Post Office (Take the elevator to Z top..) Oh, and next to Union Station there is a new Post Office Museum.

I always tell people to try and see the National Building Museum at 4th and F NW. Beautiful. Right next to it is the National Police Memorial where they add the names of fallen heros once a year.

Just talking about it makes me want to go play tourist, which I do quite often. Everything I mentioned is FREE. Metro is the way to get around unless you are hoofing it on the Mall and Pa ave.

Hope that helps.

My daughter lives in DC. Thankfully she will be moving to Alexandria in FEB. Last time we went to visit her she took us to see the National Cathedral. It is truly amazing. You can take an elevator up the tower and look out over the city. One of the coolest sights was looking out over Reagan National. You see the planes banking into the runway flight path to land.

Arlington Cemetery is a must too.

That just proves what I am always saying about DC. There is always something to learn about the city. I've been to the National Cathedral a number of times and did not know there was a trip to the top. Is that for the general public?

You can see the Vietnam Memorial, the Lincolcn Memorial, the Washington Monument and the Korean Memorial all at the south end of the Mall. Do it at night. It's fabulous!

We were just there the 9th of December. Nobody there but us!

Just got back from my trip to DC, I walked a TON and saw alot of things, all the monuments, the White House, Capital building (at night, quite a sight all lit up). I must have walked 10 miles or so. I also visited the Pentagon (I saw some freerepublic.com messages at the makeshift memorials on the site too, that was cool!). I went buy Arlington Cemetary, just as they were doing the funeral for Cyrus Vance. Wow! That place is awesome, the movies and TV just dont do it justice.. very powerul effect.

Thank you all for your great suggestions.

"the Newseum"

Hmmmm? It's good if you have only been alive for the last 15 years or so. Otherwise, it's all CNN reporting - I thought it was terribly boring!
