Import ban on foreign-made ammo?
me | Feb 8, 2002 | me

Posted on 02/08/2002 11:39:10 AM PST by SauronOfMordor

I just called up Dillon Precision to order some .45 ammo. The order-taker tells me they are all out of Wolf and Sellier&Bellot ammo, and that the reason is that there are new restrictions on the importation of foreign-made ammo since 9/11

I then call up Cabella's, they're out. I go to the SportsmansGuide.com web site, they're out of stock on Wolf and Sellier, same deal at cheaperthandirt.com

Haven't tried to order anything lately, (my wife and I roll our own). Most of the catalogs that we get are still advertising the stuff for reasonable prices. If there was a shortage the prices would be spiking I would think.

Cheaper than dirt is currently showing in stock on S&B 9mm and out of stock on S&B 45. However they are indicating that they are sold out of Wolf 223 due to the 9/11 attack.

This bears further investigation.

If there was some sort of import ban, there would be a huge hue and cry about it.

Just the Press Releases ALONE from the VPC and Handgun Control would be deafening.

There is no such ban I am aware of.

There are LOTS of retailers fresh out of all kinds of ammo, mostly the cheaper high volume "range ammo" including UMC, S&B, Wolf, American Eagle, Winchester USA etc. I think it's Sept 11 related, gotta have ammo for all those guns we ran out and bought. Just keep looking around, production will eventually catch up with demand.

I haven't heard a word. On a related note, I attended the Tanner gun show here in Denver last weekend and while I realize it was the same weekend as the S.H.O.T. show in Vegas, I was really concerned about the lack of availability and the high prices of "assault rifles" (how I hate that term) compared to the last gun show I went to shortly after 9/11. Romanian and Egyptian AKs doubled in price from around $250 a few months ago to about $500 now (what few they had). I saw only one FN-FAL (and it was an authentic Belgian collector's item) going for a fortune. Last time these were plentiful and only about $450. Bulk ammo was hard to come by as well.

I'm hoping the lack of selection and the high prices are due to the show in Vegas, but I left more than a little concerned. Did some congress-critter attach a rider to a bill and flew it in under the radar catching the NRA off guard?

You should not let the anti-gunners' terms form your firearms vocabulary.

You hate the term because it is a damn lie.

You should hate the term, it was formed to create hate,
though the hate it was designed to create was hate
directed towards gun owners.

Do not let them frame your thoughts nor your words.

If you do, they have already won.

I hope this is just a supply and demand issue, and not a real import/trade problem as I use Wolf 7.62x39 and enjoy it's excellent quality and low price. I've always been able to get it either mail order or at the shows with no problems. Haven't been to a show since 911 though. Hmmmmm...

I went to a gunshow after 9-11, and they almost had nothing but Wolf ammo. Since it cost more than Federal or USA at my local gun shop, I didn't bother. Gun shows here in CA seem to be outrageously expensive.... The cheapest price for a Mini 14 I saw was $546.... I got mine at a gun shop for $440. (stainless)

its probably the ole invisible hand. demand up, prices up.
