VANITY: Funding for SAR teams?

Posted on 02/15/2002 12:36:15 PM PST by Snowy

I am in the process of signing up for a local SAR (search and rescue) K9 team. My dog is a 6 month old golden. I have been doing a lot of research on the net and have come to the disturbing conclusion that these SAR teams are, for the most part, poorly funded. I am fully aware that my services will be strictly volunteer. I do not have a problem with that, however, I have read stories where some "volunteers" spend up to $5000 a year out of their own pocket! That I do have a problem with. Does anyone know if the government is planning on providing, or increasing funding for these teams? I understand that some of the equipment is provided, however, not all of it is. If I'm to be stuck outside all night in the middle of winter, I would like to have the warmest clothing and best equipment available. Am I being unreasonable in wanting more funding for these people and dogs, or worse yet, am I sounding like a liberal?

Where in NYS are you located? I am in NYC metro area and cannot even find a training center. The city uses only the NYPD K-9 and Nassau has no training facilities. There is a SAR association but the NYS rep actually lives in Puerto Rico.

As for funding, get the appropriate level of training then look to local groups like KoC or Lions. Build your case and keep good records.

I'm in SE Pennsylvania. I did have a hard time finding this group because many groups are either breed-specific, or want you to have some experience already. There is a SAR mailing list that I would be happy to give you information on. Freepmail me if you are interested. I'm interested in training bomb/narcotic sniffing dogs too, but just try to find training on that if you aren't on the police force! :)
