WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (AP) - A terminal at Bradley International Airport was evacuated Tuesday and hundreds of passengers had to be rescreened because a pair of scissors was found in a restroom trash can in the terminal's secure area.
One airliner that had just taken off, American Airlines Flight 623 to San Juan, Puerto Rico, was ordered back to the airport so its passengers could be sent through metal detectors a second time, said Rowlin Tebbetts, operations manager for the airport outside Hartford.
Flight 623 was back in the air within an hour, said Jim Peters, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. Some 600 passengers aboard eight flights that had taken off earlier were screened again when they reached their destinations, he said.
In addition, 10 flights awaiting takeoff were delayed while their passengers went back through metal detectors, Tebbetts said.
A janitor found the scissors in a women's bathroom between the metal detectors and the boarding area of Terminal B, Tebbetts said.

And they didn't find the matching set of tweezers?

It's demented. We can't run around shrieking "the sky is falling" over a pair of scissors.

In other news, JFK Airport officials in NYC discovered paste and crayons in a 4 year old's carry on luggage. The unidentified child was taken into custody for interrogation.

Meanwhile the borders remain open...
Some gal probably forgot she had a pair of scissor in her purse and ditched them in the can before getting on the plane.

So, the looming question is....were they serrated scissors, because everyone knows they are the preferred scissors of terrorists around the globe.

Next they'll be closing airports because someone will find
paper towels -- gasp! -- in the trash receptacles.
Welcome to the "new world insanity,"
where you can't make this stuff up!

I bet they were round-tipped kid's safety scissors, too.
Does anyone realize how easy it would be for terrorists (or pranksters) to shut down our air travel system for a day, without endangering a single life. as long as we do idiotic things like this?
And does anyone realize how many businesses are going to switch to videoconferencing or ground travel rather than put up with this?

Silly is not the word for what is happening. I am not sure there is a word for what is happening now. We now live in The Twilight Zone.

THANK GOD they weren't the dreaded nail clippers!! Let's move on....

This whole preoccupation with airport screening is a red herring. 9-11 was not an airport screening failure. Those ARAB hijackers passed the level of screening mandated by the FAA (then headed by Dashle's wife) and the hijacked crews followed the suggested response of being passive until landing. The klinker was the landing was 87 stories up at 450 mph inside the WTC.
Today's other story of the FBI/CIA ignoring warnings in 1995 of this sort of hijack are what the media and government don't want us to think about.
