(03-15) 09:34 PST SAN'A, Yemen (AP) -- An explosion was heard near the U.S. Embassy in San'a on Friday, police said. Witnesses reported seeing a car speeding from the site afterward.
A police official said an explosion took place, but did not provide any further details. Yemeni police and soldiers closed off streets around the embassy and searched vehicles.
The U.S. duty officer answering the phone at the embassy refused to give any information.
On Thursday, Vice President Dick Cheney visited San'a airport for two hours of talks with Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh on the war on terrorism. Cheney was aboard the USS Stennis on Friday.
Yup. And is a hotbed of al Qaeda activity. We've put in some troops to track them down.LOL! Holy feces, Catman! Now back to my "holy feces" mode.
WASHINGTON, March 14 (Reuters) - The U.S. Embassy in the Yemeni capital Sanaa, on the eve of a visit by Vice President Dick Cheney, warned Americans in Yemen that they could be in danger from "imminent terrorist targeting," according to a message available in Washington on Thursday.
The message, dated Wednesday, said the embassy had received "additional information" suggesting that an attack on Americans could take place at some time after March 8.
It gave no indication who might be planning to attack and did not link the threat with Cheney's visit, which went ahead on Thursday under tight security.
Cheney and Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh discussed plans for Washington to send military personnel to train Yemeni forces in counter-terrorism techniques.
The United States believes that followers of Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden are in hiding in remote parts of Yemen, where the U.S. destroyer Cole was attacked in 2000.
The message said: "American citizens in Yemen should seriously consider minimizing visits to locations associated with foreigners ... American-affiliated franchises, restaurants and hotels catering to expatriates. If you do decide to visit such locations, you should exercise extreme caution."
In unusual detail for a warning of this kind, it mentioned two specific places to avoid -- the al-Hudda supermarket on Zubayri Street and the Sanaa Trade Center.
Americans should avoid moving around Sanaa alone, vary the stores at which they buy food or ask non-American domestic staff to buy food for them, it added.
Before driving, they should check their vehicles to make sure no one has tampered with them, it said.
U.S. State Department officials said they could not give any details of the nature of the threat.
