What do you expect in a town consisting mainly of two universities and the employees of the state government. As I understand it, the politics there are a little better than in Gainesville, but the politics in Miami are better than Gainesville's (philosophically that is). Be grateful for small blessings.

Minutes from meeting... Item 1 Received a report from the Domestic Violence Coordinating Group updating the Commission on the status of domestic violence in Tallahassee and Leon County during the period 1997 through 2000
Ms. Joanne Snair, of the Domestic Violence Coordinating Group, appeared before the Commission and presented the report.
Ms. Maureen ONeil, Chair of the Domestic Violence Coordinating Group and representative of The Refuge House, also appeared before the Commission relative to this item.
The Commission discussed 1) the need for improved communication with the Court Administrators Office and the need to increase participation in the New Hope Batterers Intervention Program; 2) the importance of keeping statistics on the different cases such as cases where there unemployment, education level, or drug use were factors, as well as some data on demographics of those assigned to alternative programs; and 3) suggested looking at other locales that were attempting different solutions, such as hiring volunteer bodyguards or taking some psychological approaches.
Notice how the firearms training suggestion was "convieniently" left OUT of the reported minutes...

Which commissioner dared bring it up? You can freep-mail me if you don't want to post the info. I've had to attend so many commission meetings in the past, that now I avoid them totally.
And the boy-mayor is nothing but an Al Gore wannabe.

The only Republican on the Leon County commission is Tony Grippa, who grew up directly across the street from me on Long Island. He's a good guy, but I don't know much about his record (I haven't talked to him in about seven years).

Alachua (Gainesville), Broward and Palm Beach are all worse than Leon County (Tallahassee) but thats not saying much.

Grippa was the only candidate who ran in 2000 who was against renewing the 1% sales tax. I voted for him for that reason only. Whats funny is that lost in the entire "200 election fiasco" is the fact that I know no one in Leon County who voted for this sales tax extension, yet it passed like 66% to 33%(very overwhelmingly). Now it turns out they lied about the extension - that it will not raise enough money to cover the road construction projects that it was supposed to. Grippa seems to be a decent guy and even had Chris Weinke campaigning for him.

Since adopting CCW in 1987 and thru 1999, Florida's homicide rate fell 36% - the national rate fell 1%.
Thru 1999 only 72 permits of the approximate 383,400 issued (less than 0.019% or 19 thousandths of 1%) have been revoked (and not necessarily due to a violent crime or the use of a gun).
In 1979, the Carter Justice Department found that of more than 32,000 attempted rapes, only 32% were actually committed (approximately 10,240). But when a woman was armed with a gun or knife, only 3% of the attempted rapes were actually successful. Almost 11 times less.
In 1966-1967 Orlando was plagued by numerous rapes - the media publicized a safety course teaching women to use a gun. Rapes fell 88% in 1967 while the rate in the rest of the state (and nation) remained the same.
In 1995 law-abiding citizens use guns to defend themselves against criminals as many as 2.5 million times every year -- or about 6,850 times a day.
For those that are interested, the March/April issue of American Handgunner conatins an article by Massad Ayoob referring to a watchmaker named Thomas. Mr. Thomas was attacked on 4 separate occasions, by a total of 11 assailants - one incident involved 5 attackers. Mr. Thomas saved his own life in each instance, receiving multiple gunshot wounds, but managed to kill 4 of the 11, the rest fleeing for their lives.

PS. Mr. Thomas wasn't prowling the streets looking for targets, he was in his shop working. He eventually closed his doors, deciding that he could not risk the lives of his customers.

Thanks for the flag, David.
I just have to shake my head about this. What is it about these tin-plated politicians that make them think they always have to cater to the lowest-common-"PC"-denominator? Don't any of these buggers have the cojones to stand up for "the people" they supposedly serve? It's despicable and disgusting. Worms, all.
