Dave,

I shot a quick letter to the mayor who is without a clue.Feel free to use any part you want if you scribble a note.

Scott Maddox,

Did a quick over view of your profile and you seem to be a well educated individual in the skills of negotiating with people. Sometimes life throws a curve-ball that we couldn't have anticipated. There are times that no matter how good a negotiater you may be, reason won't work. This is really true when it comes to Domestic Violence issues, as a lot of times common sense is out the window, and things can really be ugly. For those people, the options tighten to a very narrow little window with possibilities of being beaten to death. So rather than be a victim of such actions, we seek solution. If your 5'-2", and 98 pounds, and have a 6'-2", and he is 200+ pounds problem things can be difficult.

So perhaps you want to grow to a ripe old age of 40 while your ex has told you he's going to kill you, and there is nothing you can do about it. you relay your fears to the police. They tell you that "everybody talks" and yada, yada, and that "we'll come, you just give us a call", and they continue on an already busy day. You call Domestic Violence Center and express how you've been blown off every time you seek solution. They tell you "Honey we can increase your chances of survival, come on down and talk to us again, we have a new training program that may help you". They sit you down, and talk you through a weapons course and what it covers. You know you have a lunatic ex-husband out there with only one goal (he wants to kill you). So being of strong will and small in size, you sign for a course in weapon(s) training. You learn to be proficient in the proper use of a weapon.

Word seems to get around that you've taken steps to protect yourself. This alone is a powerful deterent, especially to a coward. To those that are crazy, you still need to be prepared. It is better that an idiot die in your house from your gun, than your family grieving at a funeral. Sir, the rest of the world lives differently than you do, try seeing it from a victim's point of view. Not to belittle the police department, but it's just another domestic to them, without any clue of what you've experienced. So don't expect them to respond like a code red, this is life in reality. In five minutes, you could be dead. So no matter how well trained in negotiating the response team is, they can't bring a corpse back if it was ugly. Women don't need to be victims, they need options - Back the weapons trianing program for victims of domestic violence.

Scott Maddox needs to buy a clue.

My daughter (almost 12) and I went for our 2 mile walk last night. We carry canes with separations in them containing daggers, for protection. There are a couple of angry dogs in the area that have attacked a child recently..so that's my main focus...but I'd use the daggers readily against anybody attempting to hurt my daughter or myself. You don't mess with a mama bear. ;o)

Massad Ayoob mentioned that he couldn't contact Mr. Lance Thomas and thought it was because he valued his privacy. I have since learned that Mr. Thomas is working as an instuctor for one of the self-defence schools.

Tony does a great job at County Level.... maybe a good time to bring up CONSOLIDATION again!!... We could save the taxpayers millions by eliminating the "duplication" of services (ie. Law Enforcement)...

Thanks for the ping, David. Too many people only hear one view about guns from the ps in their lives - profs, pols, pundits and peers. Pinging for the education of the American left. (^:

** REPLY RECIEVED **

SENT ON BEHALF OF MAYOR SCOTT MADDOX:

Thank you for alerting me to your interest in this regards. My comments were in no way meant to dissuade any person from defending him or herself or from receiving firearms training. The concern I stated pertained to liability issues that would attach to the City of Tallahassee should it provide firearms or firearms training to citizens. I am sorry if my statements were misunderstood.

Respectfully,

Mayor Scott Maddox

*** MY RESPONSE **

I think he missed the point, I think the City would have FAR LESS liability if we provided or at least ENCOURGED firearms TRAINING by qualified instructors in firearms safety..

Read: 'The insurance company would raise our liability insurance premiums'. Insurance companies and trial lawyers as a group seem to be on the same team when it comes to 2nd amendment issues.

I don't know what the mayor thinks really, but thank God we are in Florida, in the capital of Wisconsin (Madison), you likely would have gotten a memo explaining that he doesn't talk to gun nuts.

Hmmm, interesting response from the mayor. I can understand his concerns about liability, but only if the instructors left out the safety part of teaching the victims about handling firearms--hardly likely. Thanks for the ping. The original idea makes a lot of sense to me.
