The blast occurred during the morning rush hour on a bridge over the river Bishnumati which flows through the city.
"It's a bomb explosion. Investigations are going on," a police official said.
The wounded included a number of children who were on their way to school and police said some of the injured were in a critical condition.
"Some of them have abdomen injuries and others have fractured limbs," said a doctor at a hospital where 22 of the wounded were taken.

There are reports that members of the security forces were trying to defuse the bomb when it exploded.
Police said they suspect the bomb was planted by Maoist rebels, who have been fighting since 1996 to replace Nepal's constitutional monarchy with a communist state.
The explosion occurred ahead of a five-day nationwide general strike called by the rebels, which is due to begin on Tuesday.
More than 2,700 people have died since the Maoists launched their violent campaign.

Guess again. Where do the Maoist rebels in Nepal get their arms and explosives? From the Pakistani Embassy in Kathmandu.
Sorry; you need a far more credible and unbiased source for this supposed ISI-Nepal rebel link.
Yet again, people lose all skepticism around here when it's something they want to believe.
Uh-huh. Very convenient for you: Everything Indians say is a lie; everything Pakistanis say is a lie; so any news article from the region that doesn't fit your personal worldview can be ignored.
Even Justin Raimondo accepts the ISI-CPN(M) connection at face value, for crying out loud. But hey, if you want to challenge antiwar.com in the Islamofascist apologist sweepstakes, be my guest. Just don't expect to be taken very seriously.
