I can do it, so can you. There are detailed posts on here telling you how to get breaking nows in the sidebar.

To turn on breaking news sidebar:
On a fancy new page, look at extreme upper right, click on the tiny word "Topics."
That'll open a new page, so scroll down until you find "Breaking News" as one of the topics. Click on it.
That will open a new page too. Look on the left sidebar, and click on the text "Click here to subscribe." Breaking News items should then show up on your right sidebar.
Oh, you may have to log in again to get this to work. Not sure about that. Last week before the cut-over I had some stuff that wasn't working correctly even though I had logged in a long time ago. But relogging in cleared it up. Just a thought.

I like this new set up...looks very professional. Looks are only skin deep however, so I'll get back to you on its functionality.

Probably once you get used to it, you'll like it better. Whenever they change this site, at first I'm sure I won't like it but then I do after I get used to it.

Are you sure you are logged on???

I don't want to slam anybody...
But if it takes a few extra IQ points for people to get used to this new site...I'm all for it...
Let's keep the riff-raff out. ;)

The major suggestion I would give is the directions to setting up the sidebar are incorrect.
By trail and error the first step is to choose topics from the top of the list (note beaking news and front page are about 1/3 down page) , then choose your topic, when the list of currect topics is loaded then there will be a "subscribe" button on the left hand side.
Hint: The order you choose them in is the order they load in. Be sure to choose them in the order you want them to show. For example choose breaking news topic first.

I wish they would have left the "Post Article" option up with "Latest Posts" and "Latest Articles".

Its not that bad, after you get used to it. I like the navigation index in the upper right corner. I think the "Free Republic" Heading should be bigger. And I like the personalized sidebars. I anticipate that I will cease griping about the new format within the week.

FR put a lot of work into this. You'll get use to it. Quit your belly achen... I bet you hated DOS 3.2 also. ;o)

It took a while for me to figure this out, as well.
See if this works for you:
Here's how to add a sidebar for "Breaking News":
(1) From the main FR page, click "TOPICS" on the left side.
(2) Scroll down to and click on "Breaking News", under the "Highlights" heading.
(3) On the left side, below the "United we Stand" flag, click on "Click Here To Subscribe".
That's it! You just added a "Breaking News" sidebar.
Other topics can be added to or deleted from your sidebars in the same way.
I should mention that cookies must be turned on in your browser for this to work.

in the upper right corner of the main forum page, click
|topics| scroll down to, and click, 'Breaking News', which you'll find under the blue 'Highlights' bar.
then from the Breaking News page, look to the left column
directly under the 'United We Stand' graphic, and 'Click here to subscribe.'
do that to a couple different topics and it'll seem the piece of cake that it is.
JR has done a helluva job with this new format, imho...

Three things that need fixing before making confusing cosmetic changes:
1) Search for keywords in articles and replies is now broken, as far as I can tell.
2) Full database search capability, i.e., over the timespan of the entire archive.
3) Capability to reply to articles over one year old.

Are you living with a big local forum message atop every screen? Or did you find a way to kill yours without delisting from your state?
I gave up and resigned from West Virginia. (Guess I'd better stop viewing family reunions as a great way to pick up girls.)

How many websites did you program and launch this week?
If you just want to whine and pout, go on over to DU.

New set-up is just fine. Appearance is great. I had been using the beta version for about a week and I learned as I went. Stick with it for a week and you'll be fine.
