This week on The Agitator Hour, heard Wednesdays at 9pm Eastern/6pm Pacific my guest is Bob Newland, Spokesperson for Common Sense Justice.
Common Sense Justice
- Between July 27, 1999 and July 26, 2000, about 12 percent of active South Dakota voters signed the "Justice Unlimited Initiative" petition (often saying as they did so, "This is just common sense.") In November, 2000, the South Dakota Secretary of State certified the following question for the 2002 ballot:
-
- Should Article VI, Section 7 ("Rights of Accused Person"), of the South Dakota Constitution be amended to read as follows?
- Blue words are current language.
Strike-throughs denote deletions from current language; underlined words denote proposed additions to current language.
-
- In all criminal prosecutions the accused shall have the right to defend in person and by counsel; to demand the nature and the cause of the accusation against him; to have a copy thereof; to meet the witnesses against him face to face; to have compulsory process served for obtaining witnesses in his behalf;
and to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury of the county and district in which the offense is alleged to have been committed; and to argue the merits, validity, and applicability of the law, including the sentencing laws.
