Opera Browser

A lean, mean browsing machine.

It's down now(?), but check out the Columbia Journalism Review's list of Who Owns What.

Try Mozilla, the open software version that works like Netscape 4.7. They are almost at their 1.0 release and it does work. www.mozilla.org

Former Netscape CEO Jim Barksdale from Mississippi and who has now returned there with his pockets filled nicely is a philanthropist with very liberal leanings. He spearheaded the drive to change the state flag for example.

They declared war on Microsoft's operating system with their browser in the mid-90's. They thought they would relegate the operating system to some sort of generic background functionality as the browser took over the desktop. Rather than roll over, Microsoft responded by absorbing the browser into their operating system. To be sure, they responded agressively to the challenge. Netscape cried foul and ran to the Feds for help. Does that make them Liberal? I'd say in a way.

So stay off their website!
If everyone did, they'd dry up and blow away.
