Re: Alexander Tyler's _The Cycle of Democracy_ - Alexander Tyler was a 18th century historian/economist who wrote in 1778 that democracy would last until the people were able to vote themselves a largess from the national treasury. It goes like this:A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's great civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage. Now you tell me why we should put on this positive outlook when we continually follow history.

The most ironic paradox of our time (if that's not the political equivalent of a double-negative) is the inability of a smug well-educated liberal to recognize his or her own narrow-minded ignorance of the screaming out-loud facts laid out before them. They believe things as they do, because they so much want them to be true, therefore they MUST be true, so there! To wit:

Democrats look out for the little guy, Republicans look out for Big Business - ergo, Democrats are from common stock, Republicans are from that richest 2%.
Fact: The wealthiest senators and representatives by far are Democrats, by a country mile.

Democrats are for the little guy, Republicans look out for "special interests"
Fact: More special interest groups, particularly those that polarize our society, are represented by Democrats than Republicans, in the legislature and the executive.

Democrats are for the little guy so of course, they are more humble, honest, forthcoming and responsible; Republicans only care about big business and the people who put them there, so they are deceptive, dishonest, scheming to rob us of our rights and our money.
Fact: Oh, come on! I don't need to point out the obvious to you guys!

Drilling in the ANWR will destroy our pristine wilderness, will produce only six months of oil, and will take ten years to get out
Fact: 2000 acres of the 1.5mil acre ANWR represents a tenth of a percent of the whole area; the amount to be pumped represents the equivalent of what's purchased from Iraq for 55 years at the current rate (6% of what we use in a year), and it's pristine wilderness up there only because it's prohibitively unhospitable to all life except for those species which have evolved to live in the Arctic region!

I'm sure I could come up with more to illustrate the folly of the unenlightened liberal if I were on my own time, but I'm actually trying to make a living here..

woops, I screwed up. Thanks to Ann Coulter (4/18/02) for the correction. ANWR is not 1.5mil acres as I stated above, it's 19 million acres, so instead of the proposed exploration site being less than a tenth of a percent, it's actually less than one thousandth of a percent.

To better illustrate this ratio, if a trip of 3235 miles from the tip of Cape Cod to the seashore in Tillamook, Oregon (US6 from one end t'other) represents the size of ANWR, the size of the proposed drilling site would equate to three and a half blocks!!!
