HUNTINGTON -- President Bush took West Virginia in the 2000 general election, the first nonincumbent Republican presidential contender to do so since Herbert Hoover in 1928.

At the same time, fellow Republican Shelley Moore Capito -- the first Republican member of Congress from the Mountain State in 18 years -- defeated Democrat Jim Humphreys for the 2nd District congressional seat that Bob Wise gave up to run for governor.

Slow but steady progress in West Virginia, no matter how badly the Dems try to spin it!

By the way, this story was the top above-the-fold story on the front page of the newspaper this morning. (You can check out the PDF file here for the next seven days.) Amazing!

Thanks for posting this. Kris Warner has been all over the state speaking to people and getting in the newspapers, and is proving to be a more dynamic party chair than Tyson was. Sprouse and Capehart are being mentioned as viable gubernatorial candidates in 2004. We really need to capitalize on GWB's victory in W.Va. in 2000.

• Several issues relevant to that election -- the future of coal, the dumping of foreign steel, gun control and abortion -- played well for the Republicans.

BIG TIME!

If there is one state in the Union which should be Republican it's West Virginny. God, guns & guts! It's about time they threw that moron Roert Byrd out too - he's more senile than Strom Thurmond at this point, and he was never more than 1/2 as smart to begin with. Byrd got votes through patronage - using transportation money. So, W Va has nice roads put not a lot of people or businesses on them!

West Virginia (Mountain Mama) has more true "Conservatives" on social issues in one acre than the state of New York has in its entirety. The problem, of course, is weening them off pork and socialism.

What's the story on Shelly Moore Capito's chances for re-election? Seems to me I read recently that she was being outdone in the fundraising department.

I think WV is so Democrat because of the unions. Most union members there, in coal primarily, vote the straight Democrat ticket from the White House to the JP court. WV Democrats have skillfully convinced the people that the "democracy" stands up for them against the "big interests," represented by the mine owners and the Republicans. The Democrats there used to rail against the "Rockefellers," but they can't use that target anymore now that old man John D. Rockefeller's great-grandson is the esteemed WV senator and former governor. As for Robert C. Byrd, I think the "C" stands for "Corny," but if TX sends John Cornyn to the Senate, we can't say "Corny," or it will confuse our TX Republicans!!! I guess the WV people actually think old Bob Byrd is going to send them a "bonus" check sometimes. (By the way, there is tremendous support in TX to send only the fifth black in U.S. history to occupy the Senate seat being vacated by Phil Gramm. TX may be going the way of WV before it's over.)

It could be fast progress this fall if the GOP had the same kind of vision statement as in '94

We're all ready for a new "Contract with America"

I'm not as on top of that situation as I might be, as Capito is not my congressional representative, but I would guess her opponent - once again - has a ton more money than she. She overcame the deficit last time, but may fall victim to the off-year-election blues this time around. Maybe someone from that district can provide some insight.

I agree. Despite their conservatism on guns, the military, abortion, and traditional family values, so many people of W.Va. can trace union membership, and working in the mills or mines, back many generations. They still don't grasp that the Democrats have done little or nothing for them in return for their loyalty to and support of the party. Some in the steel belt may be starting to get it, when they consider that Clinton/Gore lied to them for over eight years about how they'd help the steel industry but only permitted matters to get worse, and that the Bush administration listened to and considered their concerns.

What inbreeding would that be? Just for the record, that stereotype does not accurately describe the people of this state. Arkansas, maybe.

"Sprouse and Capehart are being mentioned as viable gubernatorial candidates..."

sorry. I like Senator Vic Sprouse but don't see him as being a very good governor. Now Delegate Charlie Trump - now THERE'S A West Virginia Governor for us!

to borrow a campaign slogan from John Engler's Michigan campaign:
Charles Trump - Tough Enough to Bring West Virginia Back!

I heard on the radio this morning, that a repub running for house of delegates in southern WV has a problem. He found that in Lincoln an Mingo counties there were more voters registered than people in the 2 counties. Also, in Mcdowell county, the population declined 25% from 1990 to 2000, but the voter registration went up!
