Horror writing superstar Stephen King is going blind, after developing a condition called Macular Degeneration. The Green Mile novelist - who was severely injured in an car accident in June 1999 that left him in critical condition - claims he has a hereditary disease and that he could lose his sight at any moment. But King refuses to let the prospect of blindness get him down. He says, "At least I'm alive - that's the way I feel about it."

The ocular implant is being developed by the same crew that developed the cocklear implant. May 9 2002 Drudget report linked to a report regarding six subjects, some of whom have macular degeneration, as having regained some rudimentary sight.

Volunteers were sought for this project over a year ago. Steve Wonder applied and was rejected because he was born blind and had no visual memory. Stephen King would not have this limitation.

The story linked at Drudge mentioned that one of the volunteers had been without sight for over 7 years. He was ecstatic to see his wife's face again. Another was disappointed to see the wrinkles on his face but was happy to see his brother who suffers from the same genetic born condition.

The MEMs revolution is occurring and the marriage of MEMs and genetic manipulation may mean that our next evolutionary step will be man-made!

Unfortunately, he's a big-time liberal democrat. He is unique, there is a pitcher from Bangor, Matt Kinney, who pitches for the twins, that King will go to some of the games he pitches in. He was recently in Tampa to see Matt pitch and Tampa hasn't won since. He built a nice little baseball stadium for the kids in a public park that is basically in his back yard. That's too bad about the mac. degen., maybe he'll see the Sox win the Series before anything bad happens.

Ironic that this shows up on Free Republic...you see, I live in the Bangor Maine area, and the last time I ran into Stephen King was at a "Pro-Bush" Rally the Day after Thanksgiving in 2000, during the election recount mess. A Freeper type occasion if ever there was one...we were all out in front of the BAngor Mall with signs and things and King drove by, literally coming up on the sidewalk to intimidate and frighten (quite successfully) us...Ah, the fond memories.

Roland was a great character and those books were really good. I used to play video games over the internet under that name. I loved it. I think there was a famous knight named roland that was killed fighting muslim invaders in southern europe. Maybe I got the story a little mixed up though. Maybe someone else knows more about this story than I do?
