Train Derails Over Calif. Cliff
(AP) ^

Posted on 05/12/2002 8:16:53 PM PDT by Dallas

COLFAX, Calif. --

A train carrying non-hazardous chemicals derailed in northeast California and was partially suspended over a steep cliff Sunday night.

One of the train's 73 cars hung over a drop known as China Wall in a rural area away from people and homes, said Placer County Sheriff's Captain Rick Armstrong. No one was injured and authorities said the rail car was not in danger of falling.

One of the six cars that derailed contained non-hazardous byproducts and two were carrying an ammonia sulfate powder that is not dangerous by itself, Armstrong said.

The Burlington Northern & Santa Fe train was heading east when it derailed at about 2:30 p.m., said Michael Furtney, a spokesman for Union Pacific, which owns the tracks.

The California Forestry Department dispatched hazardous materials crews to the site, northeast of Sacramento.

"We've got people out there on the scene trying to secure all the cars and make sure none of them are leaking," Furtney said. "Given the location, it's fairly tricky."

Passengers on Amtrak's California Zephyr, bound for Emeryville from Chicago, were taken away on buses to continue their journey, said Tom Gambrel of Amtrak.

The voicemail box for a Burlington Northern spokeswoman was full Sunday.

The cause of the derailment was under investigation.

Actually they are all related. They are all related to Federal regulation of the Rail industry, and the consequent mis-management that this causes.

Whether intentionally or not, people like to ignore the fact that there are always train mishaps, and have been many train mishaps over the years. Every month there are mishaps. Just after 9/11, when there is slow news, the media and some individuals like to try and make a normal every-day mishap important. They would rather assign blame to terrorists, rather than the lowest bidder or employee competence.

Much like the sharks last summer. They tried to make it out to be some kind of shark invasion around Florida. I've lived in Florida, and along the gulf coast over the years, the sharks have always been there at various times. Just slow news means the media has to make a mountain out of a molehill for ratings and manipulate those people who are looking for secret conspiraces at every turn.

Yeah! And what about all the car accidents lately, and homes and businesses catching fire, and people drowning, and falling down stairs, and paper cuts, and......

You forgot to mention the sharks along the Florida coast last year, definitely the work of OBL!

Excellent point. I'll bet that there were also some folks down there who stepped on sea urchins that "just happened" to be under their foot too! And what's with all the thunderstorms down there? Hmmm? How many folks were struck by lightning? Act of God my eye! When are the sheep gonna wake up and realize that after 9/11, accidents ceased to exist, and everything under the sun must be blamed on terrorism? Why, it's downright un-american to believe anything else!{;-)

Actually the article I read said that investigators are now looking at sabotage as a POSSIBILITY in that wreck, but not yet claiming it was the cause. If the bolts were purposefully removed, that could be just vandalism, or it could be terrorism. I make the distinction because similar forms of rail sabotage have happened before in our history. I remember one in Arizona about a decade ago, and recall reading of another in California back in the 1950's. Hard to call those two terrorism.

But I won't yet rule it out for the current Britain wreck, nor the gas canister fire in the Milan subway on Saturday. If it involves passengers, then it is always a possibility, but a freight in the middle of nowhere? I'm just reacting to some other people's absolute refusal to consider any logic before concluding that the sky is falling. The same one's on every accident thread, claiming the gov't is covering up to avoid panic.

Cloud seeding from cropdusters? ;-)

Call me paranoid, but with the Washington, DC area now in its third or fourth tornado watch since Sept. 11 (where before tornadoes were RARE), and one coming exceedingly close and ending up with two deaths at the Univ. of MD, and one ending up in the deadly F-4 in LaPlata, MD, I'm beginning to suspect something else:

Sure have been a lot of train mishaps lately, but I am sure they are all unrelated..............!

Seems like India is not afraid to call it as they see it.

Shramjeevi Exp mishap points to sabotage: Rlys

NILANJANA BHADURI JHA

TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ SUNDAY, MAY 12, 2002

NEW DELHI: The Railways have confirmed sabotage as the cause of the Shramjeevi Express derailment on Sunday, which left 12 people dead and over 70 injured near Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh.

"Preliminary investigations by the Railways have revealed that some fishplates had been removed at the site of the accident", Devendra Sandhu, chief PRO, Northern Railway, told Times News Network.

Earlier in the day, Railway Minister Nitish Kumar had said in Patna that sabotage could not be ruled out.

Sandhu said that a more detailed statutory inquiry would be conducted into the incident by the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

Thirteen bogies of Patna-bound Shramjeevi Express derailed between Kheta Sarai and Mehrawan stations near Jaunpur in the Lucknow division at around 3.45 am on Sunday. The train had left New Delhi at 1.20 pm on Saturday.

Sandhu said that six of the 11 dead had been identified so far. Relief work is on, with medical teams having rushed to the spot.

Early in the morning, the non-affected coaches in the front portion of the train were attached to a special train to transport stranded passengers. Another relief train was also rushed to the site.

The injured have been admitted at the civil hospitals in Jaunpur, Shahganj, Mehrawan and at Habib Hospital in Kheta Sarai.

Enquiry counters have been opened at New Delhi, Patna, Varanasi and Lucknow. A Northern Railways official said that 37 of the injured were still in hospital.

Nitish Kumar rushed to the accident site, as did a team of senior railway officials from the Capital led by Additional General Manager Northern Railways K K Gupta. Additional Divisional Railway Manager Lucknow has also reached to supervise relief operations.

It would take some effort to take the bolts out of one,not the kind of thing to just fall off.;o)

All seriousness aside, rail joiner bolts do loosen all by themselves. Well, not exactly all by themselves--some of them have the help, over time, of a hundred megatons of train going over them.

The more Freepers take showers, the more catastrophes happen out there while they're in 'em.

Plus, in that particular spot, the track radii and grades are at the practical limits. I'm surprised there are not more problems up there....
