I cannot imagine drugging my own child! These parents that do this (some I bet) have probably not done any research about the drugs they're using or the problems they're treating.

Parents of 14-year-olds are in their mid-to-upper 30s, and went to school at a time when they learned to 'trust' their teacher, because teachers were heroes.

So, now, when the teacher and school nurse say "Your child has ADHD and this is how we treat it", the parents implicitly trust them. I bet the NEA is giggling all over the place!

Everytime an issue involving prescription drugs comes up, the majority of FR poo-poos the existence of ANY disorders. Even O'TwitlyReilly was screaming that "there's no such thing as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and that people who claim to have it are actually character flawed." Grrrrr. THAT'S when I stopped watching him.

My point is that, yes, lots of people MAY jump on these disorders and drugs TOO quickly, but to those who actually DO have a disorder, the drugs are a lifesaver. Don't be harrassed about this. I know people with severe ADHD, and I myself suffer from PTSD. People who try to deny that these things exist are just as narrow minded as the NEA who CREATE the disorders willy-nilly. It's just NOT a black and white issue.

I'd sooner kids were on Ritalin (or Wellbutrin, or whatever) than that get involved with freakin Church of $cientology. Believe nothing that comes out of any organization connected to them.

He says that he would have been classified "ADHD" if that condition had existed when he was a child. He goes on to say that studies have proven that kids with "ADHD" tend to own their own businesses and do very well in society, WITHOUT Ritalin or other drugs. Basically, you're drugging the very people that are going to be most successful in life.

My own personal opinion is that about 75% of those taking Ritalin are actually 'normal' kids -- their behavior falls within 'normal' bounds -- but parents can't be bothered to care for a kid with higher-than-average energy levels and lower-than-average concentration.

I agree with you that many, many kids do not belong on Ritalin. But there ARE a few. I have heard Dr. Edell discuss the subject, and I know that he too suffers from it. It's good that he validates the reality of it. But as I recall, he doesn't condemn the use of Ritalin in general, just that it's overused.

The point of my post is to point out that the early twenties is WAY too young to have a child, unless a parent:

-Got married right out of high school
-Had an "accident"
-Somehow graduated from college at 16 and got a killer job
-Are named Whoopi Godberg

I disagree. I'm single, but I don't have any problem with people in their 20s gettng married and having kids. You may end up getting a few more responses about your opinion... that's a bold statement to make. Good luck.

My mom had me at 22 (yes she was married) and she turned out to be a wonderful mother...when I was 14, she was 36. I got married at 22, had my first child 3 years later, and am pregnant again at 29. I actually think it is a better idea for women to have their kids in their 20s, granted that they are stable (i.e. married), because 1)bodies are more fertile at that time, and 2) we seem to have more energy than a 40-year-old woman trying to chase a toddler around the house.

Too many women have waited until they are in their late 30s and early 40s to try to have kids to find out that their biological clock has run out. I think there is a reason that God designed us females to only be fertile for so many years. I may be wrong, but the evidence is too strong to ignore.

I agree. But we also have to be careful that just because a diagnosis is over-applied doesn't mean that it's not a correct diagnosis for some people.

I'd say 25 is OK, but any earlier than that is asking for trouble, as is starting after 35.

I should have put a qualifying statement as "these days". Of course the older generations than myself, people were way more responsible than they are today, but I know very few people in my age bracket, (Yes, I am 36) that have 14 year old kids.
