Dont Tread on Me
Posted on 05/22/2002 5:51:04 PM PDT by MamaSwami
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here goes anyway:
Any of you patriots out there know where I can get a car-flag sized version of one of the "rattlesnake" flags? The Gadsden, Culpepper, or First Navy Jack will do :). I feel that these militia flags have a rather more pointed message... "Dont tread on me" (no apostrophe in "don't" is traditional). I've searched all over the web for one, and I'm starting to think that I might have to silk-screen my own! I've seen them in 3'x 5', and I'm probably going to get one of those as well for the house, but one that size would be a bit...uh...awkward flying from my radio antenna or car window ;).
Thanks in advance.
PS: If it turns out I'll have to silk-screen one of them (probably the most familiar, the Gadsden, the yellow field with coiled rattlesnake), I'll let you know when the screens are done and will do them for whoever wants one, for cost :).

Don't forget your apostrophes.

Good luck. I spent hours and hours for a couple days trying to find a small (8 X 12" or 12 X 18") Gadsden but could only find the 2 X 3 and 3 X 5's flag pole size.
I was going to use them with an eagle flag holder I make out of pine(24" wingspan). I can make them for the larger flags (by making bigger eagles) but the small ones are faster, easier, cheaper, and more likely to sell at craft shows. I make them using the Stars & Stripes but really wanted to come up with some Gadsden.

Hi D.. Thanks, but I've already checked out those sites. Unfortunately, they are the 3' x 5' ones, which are too big to put on a car. I'm looking for something in the 18" x 24", about the size everyone is flying on their cars these days. The plate looks good, though :). I might order one of those :).

I saved
this to my hard drive, used a basic grapics program to resize (about 2.5X to 3X), did the same thing with my state flag, found an American flag and sized it approx. 1/3 larger than the other two, printed them out on a color printer and taped them (
properly) on the back window of my pick-up cap.
The display looks great and I've recieved quite a few compliments and honks of horns with thumbs up from folks.

LOL! :) (PS: You ARE joking, aren't you? "Dont" without the aspostophe is traditional on the militia flags.)

Hmmmmmm.... interesting... I have to run right now, but I'll get back with you tomorrow. If I can make some decent silk screens, maybe we could make an arrangement :).

If You're up to doing Your own, You can get t-shirt transer paper for ink jet printer.
You have to "reverse" the art and print to the transfer, up to 8.5" x 11" size.
Then transfer to cloth and mount or do two, and sew together.
Some experimentation may be necessary, but rather than spend the money on screen printing, this may to the trick.

I have a catalog which lists 4" x 6" and 8" x 12" Gadsden flags. The place is called: 'All The King's Flags' Phoenix, AZ. Phone: (800) 223-3524. Didn't see a website.

There is a printable (inkjet or laser) fabric available.
The package I have is 8.5" X 11" and is made by June Tailor of Richfield, WI.
You can print on it like paper, no need to reverse the image.

I'd love to have a "Dont Tread On Me" or even Fort Moultrie flag for my truck. I would also like to find the 2'x3' flags that NEPA mentioned. The 3'x5' is a little big for my office, but the 2x3 would be perfect.

Try this one!

My pickup flies a 3' x 5' version of both an American flag and a Gadsden flag, one on either side and just behind the cab and about 2' above the roof. Salutes abound! My only problem is that they wear out every few months by fraying on the back side edge. I replace them both when the word "ME" disappears from the Gadsden. Any suggestions about how I might keep a flag from fraying? I've tried a lot of things to no avail.

Hi again, Nepa :) I've been thinking about it, and if I can come up with a decent silk screen to make one (I'm thinking I should start with the Gadsden, it being the easiest design to silk screen... the Culpepper is only two colors, black and white, but the design is much more complex), I'll get back in touch with you here. I'll save your message in my file and reply to it again :).
I'm not kidding about this... I majored in humanities in college (which is where I learned to be suspicious of liberals, having once been surrounded by them... LOL!), and took a lot of art courses along the lines of how to make things from scratch (such as making my own molds for original ceramics pieces instead of using commercially made molds, building my own canvas stretchers, etc). I'm reasonably sure I'll be able to figure this out, since I've got a natural knack for things like this. I may have been a Renaissance artist in my last lifetime! LOL! :)
I'll get to work on a design this weekend and talk to you later :).

Hi D and Sis :) These are both excellent suggestions, but my printer isn't big enough to do an 18" x 24" flag design, which is really the size I want :(. It would mean cutting the design in half and having to carefully line it up...and maybe still missing the mark. What I'm thinking about is actually MAKING my own silk screen for it, which would be the cost of some pieces of lumber, some silk-like fabric that would make a good screen, and some time (and probably a few swear words as well! LOL!). I already have the tools to make a canvas stretcher, and the principle would be the same.
I think I would use a polyester-based taffeta for the actual flag... I'd have to check around to see what's available and how it drapes. One thing that bugs me about small flags is that most of them are usually too stiff to drape properly when at rest. But I would want it to be a good quality fabric that won't wear out too quickly, so I may not be able to help the draping problem ;). Acrylic paint would work as a printing medium, and the colors wouldn't run if the flags got wet. I ought to know... I've splattered enough of it on a multitude of jeans and sweatshirts that I own! LOL! Once dried and cured, that stuff does NOT wash out!
Anyway, I'm going to play with my idea this weekend and see what I can come up with :).
Here's hoping!

Hi W :) I'll save your message in case I come up with a decent silk screen :). Mama

Hi Mich :)
Thanks for the image. I'll use that one as my guide for making my initial sketch to trace onto my silk screen. That should work out nicely ;)
