WASHINGTON - * Group's study 30 years after Title IX finds few women choose to be plumbers or electricians and more enroll in child care and cosmetology courses. Educators say societal stereotypes are partly to blame for the disparities.

Thirty years after Congress banned sex discrimination in schools, vocational training courses for high-wage skills like carpentry, welding and automotive repair remain virtually all-male preserves, a new study finds.

The law center is asking both the Missouri and Illinois education departments to appoint federally mandated Title IX coordinators to "identify and remedy" any discrimination on the basis of sex.

Coming soon to a garage and/or cosmetology school near you - mandatory quotas for male and female employees.

Or maybe -- just maybe -- more women want to be cosmetologists than plumbers. Not a difficult concept, except for "educators" and the like.

The gender disparity in Missouri is only slightly worse than the national average, according to the study. In Illinois, the picture is slightly less severe.

Maybe this "gender disparity" isn't extrinsic, but INtrinsic. Maybe women are more disposed to careers in fashion, beauty, and sales, while men are more inclined to be tinkerers and builders.

But hey, let's just pretend everybody's the same, and that will make it so.

I guess NATURAL inclinations have nothing to do with career choices. What 'stereotyping' are they referring to? Today's stereotypical female, as portrayed by Hollywood, advertising, etc., is a CEO/brain surgeon/scientist/police detective/martial arts expert/sex goddess that exceeds her male counterpart's I.Q. by at least 50 points.

Mind you, I have no problem with women carpenters, electricians, mechanics, etc. if that is what a specific woman wants to do. Its the quotas that the Women's Law Center would impose on us that are the problem.

This goes back to what I've always said:

Men in general seek to manipulate things (computers, trucks, boats, appliances, baseballs, money).

Women in general seek to manipulate people (spouses, children, parents, co-workers).

A man can spend five hours trying to fix something under the hood. A woman won't last more than 20 minutes. A woman can spend five hours talking out a relationship problem. A man won't talk more than 20 minutes.

Over time, both see how they can manipulate things to get what they want - to achieve what's important to them. But they each have their own agendas and that's what the National Women's Law Center fails to understand. (One could cynically say that they are trying to manipulate people to achieve their own agenda.)

Nor do they understand that men don't desire to be cosmotologists or day care workers, in part, because the jobs don't pay well and women won't respect them.

Of course, they blame it on other people steering the poor gals in the wrong direction. Has it ever occurred to them that women just don't want to be plumbers or car mechanics?

When is the federal government going to fix the X and Y chromosome discrepancies and thus remove the root cause of such disparities? Everyone should be issued standard genes.

HI!

My daughter graduated with a Fine Arts degree from a very well known university in N.C.

As part of her studies she decided to take a course in welding....well, let me tell you....I went with her to a metal scrap yard to purchase some various parts for an assigned project. Good grief!! We got dirty just from walking around the place. YUK!

I asked her about the possible future of her using welding in her art works and she replied something like this:

" HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND MOM....THIS IS THE DIRTEST AND MOST DANGEROUS ART FORM I HAVE EVER DONE!! I HATE IT!!!! But, I am stuck for the semester...darn it... I was curious about this welding class and the Prof is nice..and you know, the old saying, curiousity killed the cat...well, I hope I am never this curious EVER again!!"

She does wonderful watercolors....that is her ART now....that and flower arranging.

As far as we know, NONE of her fellow female classmates choose the second art welding class and a gay fellow in the class, dropped out mid-semester and went to a school to become a hairdresser. He is QUITE successful now...owns 3 salons. Nice fellow.

Oh, I know....there MUST be many gals who do like to be dirty and have dirt under their fingernails and have that oily-greasy "glow" to their locks....and, let's hope they are very happy that way.

Gee, why don't some of those GAL educators who want gals to be welders and such....just give up their cushy clean jobs as "educators" to do those GREAT MONEY MAKING JOBS LIKE....welding, mechanics and plumbers???

OOOPS, I forgot....those that can't do...tell everybody else WHAT TO DO!!!!!

I actually have one of those (sort of) as a daughter! She has a biology/anthropology double major B.S. and is never so happy as when she is cutting her way through a rain forest, looking for an endangered bird or animal to study. She has spent a total of one year, spread over Hawaii, Australia and Madagascar, in rain forests. She is currently in what may in some ways is turning out to be the most dangerous field assignment yet, in Mississippi (poisonous snakes, flooded habitat, alligators)! She cleans up nice between field trips, but loves the outdoors. My neatnik son can't imagine doing that kind of thing, but is the prototypical "tool guy" who works with his hands for a living.

Naturalists are not really the same as as those who work with plumbing, oil, gasoline and welding....I think those jobs are more "tinkerer" jobs...Biologists/scientists are ususally, well-paid college types, not "blue" collar" workers, I think.

Those liberals want the girls to be boys and the boys to be whimps....and, homosexuals...well, they sure want to see more of them around...MORE DATES FOR EXISTING ONES, perhaps!!

Point taken, although field biologists, while they may be college educated, are mostly far from "well-paid".

How can cosmetology be considered "low paying"? My hairdresser makes more than I do, and I have a college degree and 4 years experience. Sure, long term I'll make more moving up the career ladder, but many cosmetologists make great money if they are good at what they do.
