The Italian journalist provided his answers to these questions in his final remarks. "A simple review of history, along very general lines, confirms an obvious truth: Christianity is constantly on the defensive when it comes to Moslem aggression; this has been the case from the beginning until now. For example, in Africa at present there is a bloody offensive by the Moslems to convert ethnic groups that the heroic sacrifices of generations of missionaries had succeeded in baptizing. Admittedly, some in the course of history need to ask for forgiveness. But, in this instance, must it be Catholics who ask for forgiveness for actions in self-defense, and for keeping the road open for pilgrimage to Jesus' places, which was the reason for the Crusades?"

This cannot be repeated to the relativists ENOUGH. Here's a bump for the study of TRUTHFUL, ACCURATE history. Most of what we're taught by the elitist scum in our educational institutions is lies. It's refreshing to hear an honest study of history for a change.

Another case of historical motives coming under question. Actually, in most cases the answer is "all the above".

To my knowledge the Italian government is NOT sucking up to Saudi Arabia the way ours is. Perhaps Italian journalists' minds are less clouded by Saudi PR (=lies.)

Please specify the "lies" taught by history teachers in contrast to the "truth" we find in this above article. Thanks. Shryke

Over 400 years of Jihad had preceeded the First Crusade. Ancient Christian communities were destroyed/dhmiized in Mesopotamia, the ME, North Africa, Spain, etc. The rampaging Seljuk Islamics were threatening Constantinople so the Eastern Emperor called upon the Western Church (the Pope) for help. Hence, whenever I see the lying propaganda about the poor Islamic souls I'm always thankful to see articles trying to disabuse us from the false and revisionist history about the "religion of peace". It was Christendom which was continually on the defensive. The fact that most of Eastern Christianity in just a shell of what it once was is owed the agression and Jihad of Islam.

See "Lent"'s comments below for starters. The Crusades, and "Dark Ages" are an invention of revisionists (albeit, Enlightenment-era revisionists), and were almost nothing like what we hear about today.

For the most part, my statements above were an extreme exaggeration. My apologies for doing so, but the fact of the matter is that modern Historians are revisionists to degrees appropriate of Soviet government. I am happy to hear someone bringing honest truth to one of the most misunderstood issues of history.

A breath of fresh air, but how far will it travel?
The Crusades were necessary, heroic. But who will hear this?

Alan Keyes will air the controvercial videos exposing Arafat and the brutality of Arab Islamist culture in general tonight,
but how far will it travel?

Sadly, Messori said, "the dark invention of the 'Crusade' has ended by instilling a feeling of guilt in the West, including among some members of the Church, who are ignorant of what really happened."

No guilt here! Judas Priest, it was 900 YEARS AGO you think we could move on.
One of the problems in the arab world is they are living in the past. Someone should tell them Lindbergh flew the atlantic.

I would have far less distaste for the Crusades had they not started in Europe with the destruction of the Jewish communities in the Rhineland, communities which preceded the Franks.

Christians are specificaly told to live a humble life, but that even the humblest of lives needs to be defended with tooth and nails from ravenous consumers. The muslims are exactly that, ravenous consumers.
