There's feeling down and then there's clinical depression. Everyone experiences the former; not everyone, the latter. Some people are prone to this genetically. Some people are affected by commonly-used medication (antihypertensive drugs, antibacterials, antineoplastic drugs, etc.). In other cases a depressive condition can be caused by disease (Neurological disorders with depressive aspects: Extrapyramidal diseases (Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy), cerebrovascular disease (especially anterior hemispheric lesions), cerebral neoplasms, cerebral trauma, CNS infections, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, narcolepsy, hydrocephalus; systemic disorders; endocrine disorders; inflammatory idorders; vitamin deficiencies (very, VERY rare in the U.S. unless you're an alcoholic or have a resected small bowel)).

Though mental illnesses are not transmitted by the same mechanisms as dictated by the germ theory of disease, this doesn't mean that they, including some forms of depression, are not conditions of disrupted health, such as the consequences of an endocrine dysregulation caused by a point mutation. It is disrupted health, regardless of the etiology, that is "illness", whether physical, mental, or emotional in nature.

FUTHER proof that we are luckier than heck that they lost!! Can you imagine this woman as first lady?

First Lady Laura Bush has more class in her little toe than this woman has in her entire body!! Needless to say.. we have a woman as First Lady who is intelligent, and mentally stable. I feel for those who suffer mental illness.. but in no way do I want them as "any part" of the head of this great Nation!!

I'm so sorry for your losses. I'm an RN and I do understand the importance of this test. My point was just that I don't need to hear the intricate details of a person's biology every time they go in for a procedure. However, you do make a good point in that President Bush set a good example for many who would not otherwise have this test done. I wish you the best of health always.

Once again, you are assuming that Gore would use his wife's medical problems to limit his embarrassment for not getting the nomination. Do you have any evidence to justify that assumption?
