Suspect may have targeted 300 girls

07/19/2002

By JASON TRAHAN / The Dallas Morning News

CLEBURNE - More than 300 teenage girls could be victims or potential targets of a man accused of sexually assaulting underage victims after meeting them over the Internet, police said.

Johnson County detectives said Thursday that they found names, Internet addresses and contact information for girls from Fort Worth, Rowlett, Ovilla, Coppell, Plano, Pleasant Grove and other cities at the Fort Worth home of Alfred Wayne Velasquez, 35.

So far, Johnson County authorities, working with the U.S. Secret Service and district attorney's offices in Johnson and Tarrant counties, have confirmed two victims 14-year-old girls in Arlington and Johnson County. Mr. Velasquez is accused of having sex with the Arlington girl in her home while her parents were away, police said.

Authorities said they believe the investigation is just beginning and could include many more victims.

"It's possible that he contacted more than 300 individuals," said Johnson County Detective Jason Buchanan. He said the contacts could have occurred as long as three years ago.

Mr. Velasquez is being held in Johnson County on a charge of sexual assault of a child under 17. Bail is set at $75,000. He declined a request for an interview Thursday.

"We're pleading not guilty," said Wes Ball, Mr. Velasquez's court-appointed attorney. He offered no further comment.

"He was soliciting victims via the Internet," Johnson County Sheriff Bob Alford said at a news conference Thursday aimed at letting parents and potential victims know about the investigation in hopes that more victims will come forward with information.

"This man is adept in bragging on his victims, telling them how they've matured giving them attention," Sheriff Alford said. "He later talks them into a sexual relationship."

Johnson County deputies arrested Mr. Velasquez on July 12 on a warrant stemming from a five-month investigation. It began when a patrol officer spotted Mr. Velasquez with a 14-year-old girl in a parked car at a ballpark near Alvarado.

The girl told police the two had sex after meeting on the Internet, and police arrested Mr. Velasquez on a charge of sexual assault of a child. He was later released on bond, officials said.

When police searched the home of Mr. Velasquez, who police said was an unemployed student at Tarrant County College, they found index cards containing girls' Internet contact information and physical descriptions and other identifying information. One address was in Chicago, officials said.

Police said Mr. Velasquez sometimes posed as a teenager to lure the girls into Internet contact, mostly through instant messaging software and e-mail. He may also have used teenage Web sites to find victims, detectives said.

Investigators also found what they suspect is child pornography on his computer, said Johnson County Detective Jason Buchanan.

The parents of the Arlington and Johnson County victims are upset, Detective Buchanan said.

"The young ladies are regretful of the decisions they made," he said.

Police cautioned parents to be vigilant when dealing with their Internet-surfing kids.

"If your children have access to the Internet, parents need to find out who their children are talking to," he said. "You need to make sure your child isn't playing with a loaded gun."

Authorities urge anyone who may have come in contact with Mr. Velasquez to contact the Johnson County Sheriff's Department at 817-556-6000.

"What they suspect"? Either it is or it isn't, how could there be any doubt - what an irritatingly stupid statement.

They apparently don't know whether the girls depicted are "children" or not. If he has an archive of Kate Moss pictures on the machine, it could be hard to tell...

Allow me to give the canned liberatarian response:

So far, Johnson County authorities, working with the U.S. Secret Service and district attorney's offices in Johnson and Tarrant counties, have confirmed two victims 14-year-old girls in Arlington and Johnson County. Mr. Velasquez is accused of having sex with the Arlington girl in her home while her parents were away, police said.

Girls used to have sex years ago at the age of 14 and even younger. Biology shows that they have been prepared by the Earth Mother for this type of activity. Also, her parents are evil totalitarian monsters for infringing on her right to enjoy sex.

"It's possible that he contacted more than 300 individuals," said Johnson County Detective Jason Buchanan. He said the contacts could have occurred as long as three years ago.

Contacting them isn't a crime. One has to wait until he raped every last one of them before any action should be taken. It violates our, "No force, no harm" credo.

Mr. Velasquez is being held in Johnson County on a charge of sexual assault of a child under 17. Bail is set at $75,000. He declined a request for an interview Thursday.

There is no such thing as sexual assault of a minor; the only crime here is that of the police arresting this man and infringing on both his and the childs rights.

"This man is adept in bragging on his victims, telling them how they've matured giving them attention," Sheriff Alford said. "He later talks them into a sexual relationship."

Well, they are mature; see paragraph one.

When police searched the home of Mr. Velasquez, who police said was an unemployed student at Tarrant County College, they found index cards containing girls' Internet contact information and physical descriptions and other identifying information. One address was in Chicago, officials said.

So what does that mean?

Investigators also found what they suspect is child pornography on his computer, said Johnson County Detective Jason Buchanan.

Child pornography should be legal. Nobody gets hurt. See no force, no harm.

Authorities urge anyone who may have come in contact with Mr. Velasquez to contact the Johnson County Sheriff's Department at 817-556-6000.

They just want to use this as some front in some nefarious attempt to institute the police state. First they'll get the pedophiles, then you'll be next.

I can almost bet they will trace back an element of pornography with the perp they catch who strangled the little California girl the other day, whose body was found.

The libs won't like that a bit. But it will bear repeating over and over and over again to kick them in between the eyes to show that cultural permissiveness and the sordid results lay precisely at their liberal doorsteps. (Just as does dishonesty in leadership (corporate, politics), a tone set by President Clinton.

Well, they have found nude pictures of females on the computer. The girls look too young to be 18, therefore it is suspected that it is child pornography. If the girls pictured are identified and found to be under 18, then it is child pornography as defined by the law.

I don't know about you, but I'm at the point where I could care less what they like anymore. All I know is that I don't like having their slop force fed down my throat.

As well as the results. They are like somebody who is out walking their dog, and allows the dog to take a dump in your yard. They then walk away so that you may clean it up.

Great comment. I hope you dont mind I make reference to your observation when I talk to people about how liberals go around screwing up things, and then when the really blow up, the run for cover and have almost nothing to say about their initial dark deeds that set the tone for the disaster (terrorism, illegal alien invasion, kidnappings).

For sure....I follow the Wayne name criminal game. I live in a small town in TX and read the weekly newspaper 'arrests and jail report'. One week there were 13 arrests with Wayne (Dewayne,Wain,Dwayne, etc) names. What is with this name? Someone ought to do some research on this. Unbelieveable! (there is also a high 'Lee' incidence, but Wayne is the winner)

Is there an All-Evil-Guys-Have-Wayne-As-A-Middle Name ping list?

I don't know about a ping list, but I do know that this important issue was first investigated by the intrepid Chuck Shepard, in his syndicated "News of the Weird" column. From 1996:

An increasing number of vicious criminals with the middle name of Wayne made the news in 1996. For example, Conan Wayne Hale, 20, a triple-homicide suspect who allegedly confessed to a priest in Portland, Ore., was embroiled in a constitutional court fight to have the confession ruled inadmissible. Escaped murderer Michael Wayne Thompson was recaptured in July near Farmersburg, Ind. A few days later, Danny Wayne Owens, 38, was arrested in Birmingham, Ala., for allegedly murdering a neighbor. In November, Georgia executed Ellis Wayne Felker for the 1981 murder of a college student. Also in November, the suspected rapist of a 12-year-old girl in Petaluma, Calif. (two miles from where Polly Klaas was abducted in 1993), Larry Wayne Cole, apparently died of natural causes while on the lam. And in October, the Oregon Parole Board turned down the latest bid by Richard Wayne Godwin, serving a life sentence for a 1979 rape and murder.

More:

In September 1996, News of the Weird listed an array of vicious criminals who happened to have the middle name Wayne. More: In November, Georgia executed Ellis Wayne Felker for the 1981 murder of a college student. Also in November, the suspected rapist of a 12-year-old girl in Petaluma, Calif. (two miles from where Polly Klaas was abducted in 1993), Larry Wayne Cole, apparently died of natural causes while on the lam. And in October, the Oregon Parole Board turned down the latest bid by Richard Wayne Godwin, serving a life sentence for the 1979 rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl.

Still more:

The Classic Middle Name: Conan Wayne Hale, 20, a triple-homicide suspect who allegedly confessed to a priest in Portland, Ore., has been fighting for three months now to have the confession ruled inadmissible in court on freedom of religion grounds. And escaped murderer Michael Wayne Thompson was recaptured in July near Farmersburg, Ind. And a few days later, Danny Wayne Owens, 38, was arrested in Birmingham, Ala., for allegedly murdering a neighbor. (Among other prominent middle-name Waynes: serial killers John Wayne Gacy of Illinois and Elmer Wayne Henley of Texas; recently executed Arizona murderer Jimmy Wayne Jeffers; sadistic Louisiana murderer Robert Wayne Sawyer; the Ohio Aryan Nations member caught last year with freeze-dried bubonic plague bacteria, Larry Wayne Harris; the Oklahoma rapist recently sentenced to 21,000 years in prison, Allan Wayne McLaurin; and of course John Wayne Bobbitt.)

And still more - a recent set from March of this year:

Arrested for murder: Christopher Wayne Davis (Pearl River, La., November), Jerry Wayne Dean (Jackson County, Ky., November), Billy Wayne Cope (Rock Hill, S.C., November), Joshua Wayne Andrews (Woodbridge, Va., January), Jeffrey Wayne Gorton (Flint, Mich., February), Timothy Wayne Adams (Houston, February). Murder Warrant Issued: Jason Wayne Johnson (Comal County, Texas, December). Sentenced for Murder: Mark Wayne Campmire (Litchfield, Conn., January). Executed for Murder: Randall Wayne Hafdahl (Huntsville, Texas, January), Stephen Wayne Anderson (San Quentin, Calif., January). Avoided a Murder Charge Only Because He Was Killed in a Shootout With Police: Danny Wayne Sand (Brandon, Manitoba, December). Appealed or Sought Parole: convicted murderers Kenneth Wayne Woodfin (Richmond, Va., January), Gary Wayne Sutton (Knoxville, Tenn., January).

In fact, as of June, 2001, Mr. Shepard had compiled an honor roll of all those appearing in his column between 1996 and mid-2001, with the classic evil middle name, which you can read here.

As for this particular waste of life, I can only hope that he had no transmissible disease that he might have infected his victims with, and that he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law...

Amazing list. aculeus has often pointed out the deadly "Wayne" connection.

From: 20,001 Names For Baby

"Speaking of E's, the second listing is for Earl. Nothing against the name Earl (there is Earl Campbell, Earl Warren, Steve Earle, Earl Klugh, Earl "The Pearl" Monroe and the Duke-Duke-Duke, Duke of Earl), but you want to avoid putting Earl with Wayne. Ever notice how many killers are named Earl Wayne or Wayne Earl Something?"
