Palm Beach County Democrats are getting ready to invest big bucks in "robo-phoning." The party will spend about $50,000 in start-up costs for a high-tech system that tracks voter information and uses a computer to place phone calls to voters

The GOP has been doing this in NM for several years.

Why are my geek senses tingling with such a mischievous feeling. . .

We have a "NO call" list law here in Colorado. Put your name on the list and such hacks can't call.

Computerized political phone calling should be outlawed.
Along with all government-regulated broadcasting of politics, root and branch.
Commercials and journalism. Especially journalism.

Does the no call apply to political organization ? It doesn't to non-profits most places

Florida outlaws automated telemarketing. (calling every phone number in order to solicit insurance clients) The exception is if the person called CONSENTS to recieving anoying automated solicitations.
If this is the same system the automated telemarketers use then it is illegal. I think the this is the type of thing to be reported to the election commision or secretary of state.

How can robo-phoning induce anything useful in any but the most brain-dead robo-voter? It only irritates me and anyone I know.

what's the name of the Telemarketing firm??
Michael Ansera's (Harvard SDS) Share group by any chance?

You're assuming that Palm Beach voters know how to answer the phone. "There's that ringin' noise again, Papa"

Both parties are getting such systems in a number of states. I know both Earley and Warner had them in Virginia, for example, during last year's gubernatorial race. Good stuff.

Didn't the Dems already have a robo-phonecall from Jesse Jackson all wound up and ready to go in Florida in 2000? Weren't there reports of people getting calls from Jackson by mid-day alledging voter disenfranchisement and urging people who voted to go back to the polls?
