CONSERVATIVES TURN ON ASHCROFT
Tue Jul 23 2002 20:58:38 ET

Many religious conservatives who were instrumental in pressing President Bush to appoint John Ashcroft as attorney general -- now say they have become deeply troubled by his actions, the NEW YORK TIMES is planning to report in a blistering Page One spread on Wednesday.

"His religious base is now quite troubled by what he's done," Grover Norquist tells the TIMES's Neil Lewis.

Several Bush advisers have begun complaining that Ashcroft has projected himself too often and too forcefully. More significantly, they say privately that he seems to be overstating the evidence of terrorist threats, the paper claims.

Conservtives cite Ashcroft's anti-terrorist positions as enhancing the kind of government power that they instinctively oppose.

Norquist: "If there hadn't been this big government problem, Ashcroft would have been talked about as the Bush successor. Instead, the talk is that 'too bad we pushed for him."'

Ashcroft was also criticized by some in the administration for declaring early on that the case of John Walker Lindh was a major terrorist case, the paper reports. Some officials in the Justice Department believed that the attorney general made needlessly harsh public comments about Lindh. The case came to an abrupt end last week, when Lindh pleaded guilty to two felonies and the department dropped the most severe terrorism-related charges against him, treating him as a far less important figure than depicted by the attorney general.

I have a severe problem with Ashcroft okaying using private citizens to spy on Americans and spying on places of worship.

Jah, Thane, vas is your problem mit spying on your neighbors? Do you haff somesing to hide, maybe? Hmmm? (Who was that Soviet kid who become a hero for ratting out his parents?)

I knew America was going down the road to socialism, but I never thought it would be so fast and I never thought it would be Republicans driving us there. I guess the tipoff should have been how completely Jorge Bush sold Texas on his New-World-Order borderless, elitist vision. Texans just LOVE their little brown serfs from down Mexico way, now don't they? And as long as they're making money they don't care where it comes from or who suffers. (But then Texas was never really part of America - kinda like a xenograft of a state.)

When he was just clothing naked statues with taxpayer funds I thought Ashcroft was just an expensive flake.. Now he's become dangerous to boot.

John Ashcroft, the sanctimonious fraud and dangerous man....

Since BeAChooser got banned, you've taken up his cause. You forgot to mention Ron Brown, Ron Brown, Ron Brown.

RJ, you're just gonna have to get over Clinton.

Re your Post No. 10. Why do you have a problem? I'm asking seriously. And I'm also curious. Anyone that I invite into my home - an electrician, the UPS man, a plumber, etc. will find nothing to incriminate me or my family being terrorists.

Did someone take a poll or did the NYT go out and do "man on the street" interviews until they could find the "many" they were looking for?

Reading through this thread makes me realize how low on some people's priority list liberty is.

I'm with you....a very bad idea.

Awwww, c'mon. Give TIPS a chance! After all, tyrants from Hitler to Mao to Saddam Hussein all agree that local level informants are the most effective way to gather intelligence on unreliable sorts! And it's fun, too! Rat on that pesty neighbor whose dog craps on your lawn. Make allegations against that creep your daughter's been seeing. See? We'll wonder how we ever got along without TIPS!

BeAChooser got banned? I had no idea. Actually, other then A+ Bert, I have no clue as to who gets banned. Is there a list?

Are you suggesting I should be on it? ;^)

I don't think I've ever mentioned Ron Brown....oooops, but now I have. Well, anyhow, if I may paraphrase your comment of.....

RJ, you're just gonna have to get over Clinton.

"RJ you're just gonna have to get over corruption in government"

Well, let's see,did John Ashcroft know of the evidence of Middle Eastern terrorists at the Murrah Federal Building in OKC attack or not?

Did he know when he rushed Tim McVeigh to be executed?

If he didn't know, he is incompetent.

If he did know, he is guilty of obstruction of justice!

Does he see nothing wrong with Vice President Cheneys daughter working at the State Department ?

Why did he allow Vice President Cheneys son in law to be hired at his own Department of Justice?

Ashcroft knows nothing , sses nothing, hears nothing.

He just monkeys around pretending to be the Attorney General of the United States of America.

Long live Drudge Report and the New York Times!

You're so ashamed of the piss-ant state you reside in you won't even put its flag on your profile page.

You must be a Yankee.

How is a telephone tip line a massive government program?

There has to be someone there to answer it, doesn't there? Your tax $$$ at work.

Do you own guns? Ooops! Might be a right-wing militia member. Do you have a Bible and religious materials out? Ooops! Might be an abortion clinic bomber! Do you collect Civil War memorabilia? Ooops! Might be a Klansman! Or maybe you made the electrician or the plumber re-do a shoddy job and he wants to get even.

Oh, I get it now. Can I turn in my suspicions about Freepers who don't like my comments, too? Fun!! Is sinkspur a target?:^)

Grover Norquist is a shill for the Arabs and Muslims. He was rebuffed by the WH for bringing some terrorist supporters around. Now he turns on Bush and Ashcroft because they are tough on terrorism.

We have 5 mosques within 10 miles of my home. At 3 of them AlQeada affiliated Moslem thugs forced out normal, decent people.

They now meet in the basement of a nearby Baptist Curch on Friday evenings for prayer.

There's a very, very good reason for the FBI and other federales to go into places of worship, e.g. mosques taken over by thugs, and see what is going on. Anyone who objects is doing AlQeada's work!

Grover Norquist is a pro-Illegal, "Islam is peace" RINO turncoat.

If Norquist has got the knife out for Ashcroft, it's because the Attorney General is doing something right somehwere to one of Norquist's triangulation constituencies.

Norquist is a muslim lackey. He's mad at Ashcroft for going after his terrorist buddies.

I don't know that I'd call Grover a "muslim lackey".
He'll do a lap dance for anybody willing to ante up, no matter what their faith.
