A leading Dutch politician who has called for returning European ambassadors from Tel Aviv is the sole candidate to become the Netherlands board member of the World Bank representing also Israel at the prestigious financial institution in Washington.
According to Dutch newspapers, the new Dutch government has agreed to appoint Ad Melkert, a former prime-ministerial candidate, as its representative to the board of the World Bank. The Dutch delegate acts also as the representative of Israel and several other countries which are not entitled to appoint board members.
Melkert, who led the Dutch Labor Party (PvdA) to one of its largest defeats in history in the May general elections, proposed in a TV discussion in April during Operation Defensive Shield that all members of the European Union recall their ambassadors from Israel. He then initiated a proposal in the Second Chamber of Dutch Parliament to recall the Dutch ambassador from Tel Aviv.
The motion was one vote short of majority and therefore rejected. It was supported by all Labor Party parliament members and other parties left of center.
According to press reports the LPF party, which was the only one resisting Melkert's appointment, has withdrawn its opposition to the nomination. LPF leaders have accused Melkert together with the leaders of several other parties of incitement and therefore indirect responsibility for the murder of its former leader Pim Fortuyn on May 6.
Dutch newspapers reported that Melkert is interested in resigning from parliament and leaving the Netherlands for the well-paid directorship in the US, especially because he has to move around surrounded by bodyguards since Fortuyn's murder. After the assassination the Christian Democrats, which won 40 seats in recent elections, became the largest party in the Netherlands followed by the LPF. The Labor Party lost half of its power, winning only 24 seats, going from being the largest party to number four in parliament.
Israeli sources said the Netherlands represent Israel both on the board of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The Israeli delegate to the World Bank has his office at those of the Dutch delegation in Washington.
The World Bank is owned by the member countries whose views and interests are represented by a board of governors and a Washington-based board of directors. Member countries of the World Bank are divided into several groups, known as constituencies, which are all represented at the board of directors by a single country. Israel is included in the Dutch constituency.
These sources said that Israel could not block the appointment of Melkert as the Dutch hold 51% of the votes in the constituency. They added, however, that in the past members of the constituency were asked to approve the Dutch appointment.
To all NY area Freepers: when you see this man, get ugly on him repeatedly and while doing so shout at him he is a killer
He is a salon-elitists of the worst kind and lies even about facts. So a true socialist. He became really hated after several discussions with Pim Fortuyn. Melkert accused Fortuyn of being a nazi and snubbed at him. He caused a lot of PvdA voters to vote for other parties.
His former party, the PvdA is known for it's anti-Israel/pro-Palestinian ideas. The front-man of their public broadcaster, Marcel van Dam (a former PvdA minister) thinks it is okay for the Palestinian terrosists to kill civilians in order to 'free their country'. People like them make me ashamed of being Dutch.
To all Israelis: I hereby officialy apologize in the name of the LPF and right thinking Dutch people.

I am not ashamed of being American because of Jesse Jackson, Hillary Clinton or Noam Chomsky. As long as you are fighting the good fight as best you can, that's all you can do. Look at the strides made by the LPF! Hang tough.
Klintoons face on the bottle and Taliban Jesse are the best!

"I don't believe 9-11 happened because of an intelligence breach," Quayle told Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes.""I think it was really a policy breach. It was the inaction of the previous administration, by and large, that al Qaeda -- and bin Laden in particular -- thought that they could hit the United States, and there would be a retaliation maybe of a cruise missile but nothing more than that," he explained.
The Final Legacy. . .
To the folks at the DU this may seem like heaven, but this is exactly like I imagine hell!
