Thanks for the ping, Cap.

In the interest of full disclosure and regarding our recent postal match, I spent some time with a local firearms instructor (former member of the Marine Corps Marksmanship Team) and learned that my poor efforts were not the fault of the rifle. It was all me.

Turns out that because I've done so much shotgunning I had fallen into the habit of gripping the forearm in order to better guide the bbl along the path of the birds. This had slipped over into my rifle shooting, and was causing the deflection problem. The instructor caught this with some dry firing and a little one-armed aiming test. Once I started using my left hand only as a prop, I started putting them into the bull one after the other.

So, it's not true. Old dogs can learn new tricks.

interesting...I know I've got some bad shooting habits, & I know I would benifit with some time with an instructor.

I've got a very old Colt 1911 .45 that I thought was a sloppy shooter. My dad (75 y.o., cant see out of one eye and is blind in the other) proved to me that I, not the gun, was responsible for my poor groups. 50 years ago he shot NM for the army, and was recipient of the Distinguished Markmanship Medal with pistol. Ive got a long way to go...

The beauty of marksmanship is that you can ALWAYS go up to a higher level. Every time I thought I had 'arrived' at being a good markman, I come across someone who shows me I have a lot left to improve.

I remember the shooting high 370's (out of 400) on Marine Corps ranges only to come across a gunner or Sgt shooting high 390's one-handed.

Marksmanship is truly a beautiful thing. Putting bullets downrange is one of life's greatest pleasures.

Thanks for the ping. Wish I could, but will have to wait for the next postal match. My eye is back to 100% and I'll be able to practice for the next match.

Update on the match...

The wife and I are officially entered in now and the competition is going to be intense. The pig roast on Saturday night is going to be a treat for all. I hope some of you can make it. The more that show up, the better the match.

I spent a week learning long-range (up to 900m) rifle at Storm Mountain. Great facility, great staff. Hope I can go (schedule is currently very fluid).
