A proposed transit hub linking a rebuilt PATH station with downtown subway lines could be completed as soon as 2005, officials said yesterday.
At a news conference announcing the release of $4.55 billion in federal aid for downtown transportation projects, Port Authority and Lower Manhattan Development Corp. officials said the cash infusion could allow most projects now on the drawing board to become reality in three to five years.

Swell, FEMA can now build new projects and not just replace what was destroyed. Given NY politicians that's bad news for the rest of us.
Bush has the idiotic notion that he has a chance to carry NY so there's no reason to think the flood of money going to NY won't continue.

This is to replace the station that was under the World Trade Center. Five tracks in constant use 24/7, all gone. Even without the WTC there's a need to replace the station as soon as possible.

As you say, it should be replaced. Unfortunately, we're looking at more than merely replacing the PATH station and the other subway lines that were destroyed.

If you will look carefully, the 3rd person from the right-in the back- is Jon Corzine.
I would imagine he,Chuck,Hilly-poo. and a few insiders have already gotten options on some of the required real estate.
Jon's portfolio has taken a hit or two, and I'm sure he has figured out how to recoup the 50-60 million he spent getting elected !

LOL, good one!

Excellent point, you are absolutely right, though the bold color also draws attention to the fact that she is as wide in the beam as that podium!

As you say, it should be replaced. Unfortunately, we're looking at more than merely replacing the PATH station and the other subway lines that were destroyed. We have an opportunity to connect PATH (to New Jersey) to the "1" "E" and "N-R" lines - which had stops in the WTC concourse. We also have the opportunity to connect to the "4-5" lines which were 2 blocks east of the WTC. These rail lines were built independantly a century ago. We now have the chance to connect and steamline them.
Unless you have seen it, it is impossible to imagine the rivers of people who used these subways/rail lines. I hope that people with vision will be involved with the planning so that the congestion downtown will be reduced.

Not only have I seen it, I have used almost all of the lines you've referred to. That doesn't change the fact that the opportunity you'd like to take advantage of should be paid for by NYC, NY State, NJ and the Port Authority. Every state and major city in the nation can dream up opportunities to spend federal dollars. I'd rather they either spent their own money or funds raised in a bond offering. If the only way they're prepared to proceed is with someone else's money then they shouldn't proceed at all.

,,, check out the yellow bus in post #1. No, no, no - not in the centre, on the far right of the photo.

She looks like some sort of genetic experiment, of a cross between a hippo and a canary, gone horribly awry.

I didn't have the impression that they intended to use OPM to redesign and rebuild the subway and rail lines in the vicinity of the WTC. But as long as the federal trough exists (I think we agree that the Feds too freely spend too much of our money) the City and States would be stupid if they didn't try to obtain as much money as they were "entitled to " under the current laws.
