Muslim extremists in Denmark have prepared a "hit list" of 15 prominent Jewish leaders in that country, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten reported last week.
The names of the targeted Jews were not published, due to pressure from the Danish police. However, Ha'aretz has learned that the list includes a former chief rabbi of Denmark, Binyamin (Bent) Melchior - father of Israel's deputy foreign minister, Rabbi Michael Melchior.
According to the paper, the "hit list" specifies cash prizes to be paid to anyone who succeeds in killing someone on the list.
The paper based its report on sources in Denmark's Muslim community. It said it did not know who was responsible for drafting the list, but suspicion has fallen on Hizb ut Tahrir (Liberation Party), an extremist organization that has expressed support in the past for killing Jews. Due to these statements, the Danish Justice Ministry is currently considering outlawing the organization.
The head of the Danish Jewish community, Professor Jacques Blum, told the paper that the hit list shows that "the intifada has reached Denmark. I view it as very grave that Jews cannot walk about freely on the streets of Denmark."
Binyamin Melchior, who was chief rabbi of Denmark from 1969-96, told Ha'aretz that he does not know whether his name appears on the list, "but I would be very disappointed if I didn't appear."
He said that police representatives "spoke with various people in the community, I among them. They didn't tell me I had been personally threatened. They only told me not to be afraid, they are taking care of the situation... They said they are keeping watch over places where they fear something might happen, but I don't know whether they are watching my house."
"There is no need for any Israeli pressure on the matter, since the Danish authorities are taking the necessary steps themselves," he added.
Melchior, who recently started an association for interfaith dialogue in Denmark, said the reported hit list is no indication of the general state of Jewish-Muslim relations in Denmark.
"I will be meeting tomorrow [Monday] with the heads of our organization, and I am certain everyone will denounce the threats," he said.
I'll tell you what. When this shit starts happening here, I'LL BE READY, YOU CAN COUNT ON THAT! Violent Muslims beware.
OK. 1,000 violent muslims for every Jew. OK? for me, I would prefer 10,000 violent muslems for every Jew. But hey. I can be reasonable.
He is an easy target. Just a big mouth that always seems to insult just about everyone. I am sure, what ever the "evidence", he will be convicted and spend some quality time in prison.
Getting rid of Irv killed two birds with one stone. They got rid of an irritant and offered the Muslims in L.A. a scapegoat.
Sorry. No cigar for you. But I appreciate your suggestion as a positive referendum vis my latest rants. But killing the bad guys has been a princple of human interaction for, shall we agree, quite some time. Although might has made right for most of human experience, there has also been a trajectory of right making good, would'nt you also agree? I might not have agreed with all of Rubin's actions and targets. But in the current scenario, ruthless action seems to be rightly prescribed.
You are correct. Clear victory (or surrender by one side) is a necessary prerequisite for peace. The main problem is that there have been too many interferers. In most historical conflicts, the situation is resolved by a victory of one side over the other as you suggest. The problem here is that when you have interference by heavyweight players (USA, Europe, etc.), the situation becomes politicized and thus it is dragged out. The best recourse would be for the others to stand aside. But that will not happen. This is unfortunate, because the Israelis want peace and stability, and the Arabs want insurrection and war, and the war fever of the Arabs will not be spent, as it should be in defeat.
