President Bush announced yesterday that he would not attend the U.N. Earth summit in Johannesburg later this month and would send Secretary of State Colin L. Powell instead.

"Poverty remains a huge and urgent global problem that demands action by the entire world community. We will stand together in Johannesburg to bring our full support to this important battle," Mr. Bush said in a statement.

It would be a good idea for the US to present a progrowth agenda, but when you look at the personnel, there doesn't seem to be anyone who could do it, let alone who believes in it.

Looks like Powell is getting the backwater duty while the players are discussing strategery at the ranch...

They will bring "concrete and practical proposals" for "key development priorities — clean water, modern energy, good health and productive agriculture — that can lead us to a world without poverty," Mr. Bush said.

Proposal to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development: Try capitalism, morons.

That's exactly how I took it, too. This is definitely humiliating for Powell.

I heard a conservative pundit the other night who speculates that the real reason behind Scowcroft, Armey, Eagleburger and Powell's reluctance to attack Iraq, is that THEY were the ones who didn't want to go into Baghdad in '91, and if (when) Dubya topples Saddam, and we find out firsthand the huge frightening cache of WMDs he has been hiding, all of #41's team will be seen as having screwed up.

This is why, in HER opinion, they are trying to stop Dubya from going in. Pretty poor reason, if true.

Summit gatherings have never accomplished anything but guilt assigning, excuse making, and extortion of property from the will do's and have done's,(mainly the US tax payers) for the could do's but too damn lazy to do's who refuse to ever do.

THe UN solution is a carbon copy of LBJ's great society, except it is global and a hundred times more expensive. If anything at all has been learned over the past thirty eight years of Johnson's welfare scheme, it is that rewarding sloth, encourages sloth.

Punishing the responsible for being more successful than the irresponsible is a raciest crime, that would be condemned to high heaven, if it were aimed in the opposite direction.

Oh, right...I'm sure they'd much rather that secret stockpile of WMD grows until we're all blown to smithereens, right?

What a lame story.

He sent the diplomat. I predict Powell will say nothing of substance at this so-called summit, but say it very nicely. Which is his job. He's not a general any more so why expect him to act like one?

SEE THIS THREAD. Not only is he going, he's writing propaganda for a UN publication. This article is on all US EMBASSY websites in Europe and other Nations.
Powell Says Sustainable Development is Compelling Issue for the United States

(Powell article in special edition of U.N. publication) (2090)

(This byliner by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell appeared in an August 12 special edition of the United Nations Environment Program magazine "OUR PLANET" and is in the public domain. No republication restrictions.)

(begin byliner)

ONLY ONE EARTH

Colin L. Powell

The World Summit on Sustainable Development comes barely 20 months after we welcomed in the new century. Despite the stories and images of trouble we read in our newspapers and view on our television screens, this is a time of great opportunities to expand peace, prosperity and freedom. The spread of democracy and market economies, combined with breakthroughs in technology, permits us to dream of a day when, for the first time in history, most of humanity will be free of the ravages of tyranny and poverty.

We live in a century of promise. Our responsibility now is to turn it into a century of hopes fulfilled, a century of sustained and sustainable development that enriches all our peoples without impoverishing our planet. When we talk of sustainable development, we are talking of the means to unlock human potential through the interlocking threads of economic development based on sound economic policies, social development based on investment in health and education, and responsible stewardship of the environment. Sustainable development is for the United States, and for me personally, a compelling moral and humanitarian issue.

Bush always sends Powell when he wants cover for pushing the liberal agenda. That's Powell's job. Otherwise, Bush couldn't pretend to be a conservative.

Powell sent to Earth summit

That's nice. Fantasy land needed representation. I hold that MF directly responsible for being the loudest mouth naysaying taking Saddam out while we were at his front door. How many lives will his stupidity cost the Earth now?

I used to have a lot of respect for the guy, but over the past few months he's "hugged" one too many terrorists for my tastes.
