Six Pakistani men who gang raped a woman on the orders of a village court have been sentenced to death.
The high-profile trial, before a special anti-terrorism court in the Punjab provincial town of Dera Ghazi Khan, has highlighted the abuse of women in rural areas.
Rape order
Mai was raped by four men after approaching the traditional jury to settle a dispute with the rival Mastoi clan.
She went to the jury after her 12-year-old brother was kidnapped and abused by clan members as a punishment for having an affair with one of their relatives.
The jury ruled that to save Mastoi honour Mai should be married to a Mastoi man.
She was raped after rejecting the decision she was gang raped by the men.
Armed guard
Four men were sentenced to death for committing the rape. The others were sentenced for serving on the village jury that authorised the crime.
Armed police units were stationed throughout Dera Ghazi Khan where hundreds of members of both families and their supporters had gathered for the verdict.
Mai and her family have received death threats.
Dozens of gang rapes and "honour" killings were recorded in Punjab this year alone.
The latter involves the murder of women by fathers or brothers for "crimes" such as marrying without the consent of male family members.
Someone remind me why we bother to even entertain the idea that such cultures have any value whatsoever and why imperialism, cultural or otherwise is wrong?
Oh yes and the obligatory sarcasm - remember, Islam is a religion of peace.

Killing rapists is of some value, I'd say.
That's true, but I was referring to what the villagers would have done had they been left to their own devices.

Too bad you got rid of it. I think people are missing the point, so I'll reiterate - Islam, which is supposed to be beneficial to social order according to its apologists, somehow led this village court to think that sentencing this poor woman to be raped was acceptable.
It took intervention from the outside to correct it, and thankfully, that intervention was well done, but it should not have been required, if indeed, Islam is as for justice as its apologists say.

The states didn't. It was the Warren Court that ruled it unconstitutional. I would support a constitional ammendment explicitly allowing the death penalty for crimes other than murder.
I always wondered how Earl Warren escaped the attentions of Tailgunner Joe. ;)

I'd like to have the death penalty restored here, period. Voters are in favour, but the politicians don't want to listen.

They would have done nothing.
Civilization often has to be imposed from the outside with a heavy hand. In India they once told the British that "Burning widows on their husbands pyre is our custom and so should be allowed." The British politely responded that they "Should understand that hanging men who burned women is our custom." It took time but the practice, for the most part has died out.
I would have been outraged if the Pakistani government had done nothing but they did the unpopular thing and should be praised for it.

Not exactly, they sentenced that poor woman to be raped.

Indeed, one of our great achievements. The Indians will never admit it however.

Agreed. And how un-Islamic of them too.

What really needs to happen is an alternative free trade block to the EU. If NAFTA could expand membership, countries like Poland and Turkey could join that instead of the EU. Possibly Britain (especially if Conservatives return to power) would leave the EU if NAFTA were an alternative.
William Hague already had discussions with Republicans in that regard. We would prefer it.
