ATLANTA -- A City Council member plans to introduce a resolution tonight asking restaurants not to serve water unless patrons ask for it. If the measure passes, Atlanta will be the latest city to curb this dining-out tradition as much of the nation struggles with persistent drought.

KEYWORDS: drought; freshwater
Concern over fresh water supply is becoming increasingly common in our nation due to pressures from drought and population growth. Our coastal states are frequently evaluating the viability of desalination systems to provide their fresh water needs. Desalination is an energy intensive process, so it is quite common for these facilities to be built in close proximity to electric power plants. For this reason, it is also reasonable to consider the use of nuclear desalination as a potential option.

Cool Water

All day I've faced the barren waste
without the taste of water..... cool water
Ole Dan and I with throats burned dry
and souls that cry for water.... cool, clear water

The nights are cool and I'm a fool
Each star's a pool of water.... cool, clear water
And with the dawn I'll wake and yawn
and carry on to water.... cool, clear water

The shadows sway and seem to say
tonight we pray for water.... cool, clear water
And way up there He'll hear our prayer
and show us where there's water.... cool, clear water

Keep a movin' Dan don't you listen to him Dan
He's the devil, not a man he spreads the burnin' sand with water
Say Dan can't you see that big green tree
where the water's runnin' free, it's waiting there for you and me

And water.... cool, clear water

Dan's feet are sore he's yearnin' for
Just one thing more than water.... cool, clear water
Like me I guess he'd like to rest
Where there's no quest for water.... cool, clear water

" A City Council member plans to introduce a resolution tonight asking restaurants not to serve water unless patrons ask for it. "

Similar thoughts have occurred to Honolulu government officials when the strikes have affected supplies of toilet paper across the state...

Seriously, while Atlanta continues to be in a drought, the low lakes are as much due to the use of water for power generation as for anything else. This guy could save more water by asking that more power be conserved.

having to ask for water has been the rule in NM for years. Hotels also ask you to reuse towels.

Sign once seen on a toilet tank: If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down.

Yeah...but then you'll likely be showering all over again in a little while....

if it's brown flush it down.

Very similar to an anti Jerry Brown bumper sticker out here several years ago.

All restaurants should be required to serve food on paper plates and use disposable knives, forks and spoons. All hotels should be required to install metered showers and flush toilets. $1.00 per shower, $1.00 per flush.

New watering rules take effect today

By The Denver Post

Saturday, August 31, 2002 - A host of new Denver Water restrictions go into effect after midnight tonight, including the "never on Sunday" lawn-watering ban for all of September. Denver homes whose normal circle-diamond-square watering day falls on one of the five Sundays in September should not water on that day. Saving five Sundays' worth of water before an all-out watering ban begins Oct. 1 may keep Denver reservoirs from draining too much before next spring. Other restrictions effective today include a cutback from three hours to two hours of total lawn watering on your designated day; doubled fines; watering of tees and greens only on golf courses; and an end to exemption permits for landscaping, new sod or other special situations
