Low income Hispanics & blacks are far more likely to go to college than low income whites (My title)
The Washington Post ^ | October 2002 | Laura Sessions Stepp

Posted on 10/30/2002 1:42:08 PM PST by End The Hypocrisy

After graduation recently, 2.5 million American seniors enrolled in either a two-year or a four-year college. Almost a million did not. They were overwhelmingly poor, male and white. Much to the surprise of social scientists who traditionally have looked for educational problems among minorities, low-income black and Hispanic men are more likely to go to college right out of high school than white guys. So are young women of any background, in fact.

And yet some would say that it's a White Man's country, so quotas should benefit everyone EXCEPT FOR white males. Will the U.S. Supreme Court finally put an end to race-based admissions preference unfairness?

Linda Chavez's organization sure did say it well, fairly recently:

http://www.ceousa.org/html/update/update.html

A detailed, 50-page study released by the Center for Equal Opportunity concludes that racial discrimination is widespread in Virginia law school admissions. The report focuses on the three Virginia public law schools -- the University of Virginia, William & Mary, and George Mason University -- and reveals odds favoring black applicants as high as 731 to 1. To put it in other terms: A student with an LSAT score of 160 and an undergraduate GPA of 3.25 had a 95 percent chance of admission if he or she was black, but only a 3 percent chance of admission if white, Hispanic or Asian.

This isn't unexpected.
Women and Minorities get Affirmative Action, white males are the victim of officially sanctioned discrimination. This is especially acute in financial aid, where white men area ll but written off.
Moreover, for the past 20 years, our educatio system has been discriminating against boys. Competition, recess, and memorization are no longer accepted methods. For the past 40 years, we have dropped Phonics, the most effective way of teaching reading for alphabetized languages. Instead, we use "whole_reading", which girls are far better at. (Girls still do better with phonics than without, but the discrepency is not as large as with boys.)
Add to this leftist curricula which hold white men to be evil and boys are screwed by our educational system. The entire pedagogy is Feminist and New Left.

And I thought the DemoRats fought tuition vouchers merely to appease unions. They apparently view schools as a battleground to get their own people ahead.

>>>The only way to stop the state-sponsored obliteration of the white male is to break the two party strangle hold.<<<

How can that be done when the folks at Debates.org and the folks at FEC.gov don't allow any 3rd party candidates to debate on national t.v. (and benefit from the awesome corresponding publicity opportunities) UNLESS they already have 15% of the public support? Perot, despite his billions, couldn't even swing that in '96 and Nader (despite his network) couldn't in '00. But as we saw in '92, access to the debates can have a real impact for any 3rd party. I'm not saying I would want Perot in charge, but I'm enthused that Jesse Ventura's going to appoint an Independent as Wellstone's replacement in the Senate.

GMU vs. UVA:

I recall having read that GMU is actually not into playing the quotas game. But yes, I believe that the statistics you're referring to tend to apply to U.Va. Law (at least for the time being).

Gosh, ETH, don't you know nuthin'? Low income blacks and hispanics: Noble victims of a racist society and economy who can do no wrong. Low income whites : Trailertrash redneck neandethal Archie Bunker-type scum who kills "homos" and minorities for fun. I thought everyone knew that...After all, haven't you noticed that blue collar whites are fair game ? Remember when a sitting president's friend and advisor describing (rural, white, southern) women who live in trailer parks as whores who'd do anything for $100?

This should come as no surprise to anyone. And while I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the study (I don't have a link in other words, and it's been so long since I glanced at it that I cannot google for it), and there are certainly many ways to account for this discrepancy if it exists-there is a study somewhere in FR's archives which purports to prove that low income white children whose parents are factory workers, retail salesclerks, etc do as well as or better on the SATs than upper class black children whose parents are doctors, lawyers, etc.

They are more apt to go to college but they are less apt to graduate from college. More white boys graduate from college every year than do all minority men combined. Funny thing is that today more white women graduate from college than any other demographic group.

It's not hard to figure....

All the "free ride" tickets to college given to minorities. I know of several students who were unable to go to college because they couldn't afford it, yet other students of similar academic levels/testing and financial status were able to go on a free ride - minority scholarships.

Descrimination? You decide - two otherwise identical students with only one major difference - the color of their skin....

That's how it is around here, a white student won't get scholarship money no matter how well they do, a hispanic doesn't have to have good grades or be poor and it's free college. Scholarships have become another form of welfare for the most part and a welfare program based almost entirely on race or ethnicity.

That might be The Bell Curve, co-authored by Charles Murray. Quota fans claim that the lack of minority role models explains why upper class minority kids don't do better, but on the other hand they've got their parents (and their parents' peers). Meanwhile...doesn't Hollywood go out of its way to be "politically correct"? For example, when is the last time anyone saw a white male judge in some t.v. or movie production? It's been about 15 years since I've seen anything like that.

Meanwhile, when such minority kids realize that thanks to quotas, they'll get into a profession but be viewed as mediocre merely because of the existence of skin color-based quotas...what's the use in developing one's mind? I think Jeb Bush's "One Florida" policy is what's best for minorities, and it's looking like Jeb will become the first Republican governor of Florida EVER to get re-elected.

Hmmmm.... You've just enabled me to figure out why tuition keeps going up at the college level, well beyond inflation rates. It's been shown that nearly all academics are Democrats. They know that now matter how high tuition becomes (for their self-enrichment, too) their key constituents will get financial aid to the exclusion of white males (who probably tend to be Republican).

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

If the Supreme court did that, they would be making law, not interpreting it. In fact, I think private schools should be allowed to have any admission preferences they want and that includes religious schools and bob jones u.

This needs to be dealt with locally.
