NEWARK, N.J.(AP) _ Former President Clinton, who urged New Jersey Democrats in May not to abandon Sen. Robert Torricelli, returned Saturday to exhort them to elect the party's replacement candidate. ...

At a raucous rally of 500 faithful, many of them members of the Service Employees International Union, Clinton called Lautenberg essential to Democratic hopes of returning to better economic times like those when he was in the White House.

"No one did a better job in those years than Frank Lautenberg," Clinton said. Referring to the razor-thin majority Democrats are trying to protect, he added, "He may be the deciding vote every day for six years."

Lautenberg took the stage as the crowd cheered: "We want Frank, we want Frank."

"That makes two of us," Lautenberg said.

He continued his campaign attacks against Forrester, for what Lautenberg says are unreasonable positions on gun control, taxes and the environment.

"This guy, Forrester, is still in the forest. We're trying to get him out," Lautenberg said. "My friends, the differences are obvious and we're feeling pretty good."

Forrester's campaign insists Lautenberg is out of touch with voters, especially in defense and security issues. Republicans contend his anti-death penalty stance is inappropriate in the war on terror.

Forrester has also attacked Lautenberg's vote to create a tax on Social Security benefits. U.S. Small Business Administrator Hector Barreto campaigned with Forrester Saturday.

Clinton used his time to joke about Lautenberg's age.

"I think he's matured enough to do a good job this time around," Clinton said of the 78-year-old candidate.

Lautenberg served three terms in the Senate before retiring two years ago. He returned when Torricelli resigned Sept. 30 after months of reports about illegal campaign contributions and unethical gifts.

Clinton starred at a May 31 rally in Newark for Torricelli, who was then battling ethics allegations endangering his re-election bid.

"He loves public service, and he understands in the year 2002 in Washington, D.C., if you're a Democrat, it's a contact sport," Clinton said at the time. "You need to understand here in New Jersey, I don't care if Bob Torricelli is 25 points ahead in the polls, they're going to come after him, so you can't be complacent."

Two months later the Senate ethics committee "severely admonished" Torricelli, a reprimand that came after accusations of years of illegal campaign contributions and unethical gifts.

Polls showed support for Torricelli dropping. He had a lead of 13 points over Forrester in June, but by September the GOP candidate was up by that amount.

On Sept. 30, Torricelli ended his campaign, saying the control of the Senate was more important than his political career.

During lengthy, emotional resignation remarks, Torricelli apologized to Clinton, who had urged him to stay in the race. ...

A caller to C-SPAN this morning claimed that he was a doctor (internal medicine), with over 30 years experience. He said, after watching the debate (Lousyberg and Forrester), he was convinced that Lousyberg has beginning Alzheimers and that he probably wouldn't serve more than six months.

He also said that by putting him in this high stress situation, the DemocRATs are shortening his life.

In yet another "too good to be true " category :

NBC is televising another so-called debate between the Louse and Forrester hosted by Gabe Pressman ( can we spell s-o-f-t-b-a-l-l ). It airs at 7:00. Immediately following is the movie "Jurassic Park".

Goes to show that if you tune in to the debate too late to catch one dinosaur, you will be able to catch a few more later on.
