The USO Canteen FReeper Style
Delivering a Touch of Home

A Touch of Home
.
This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.
Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.
Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.
This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.
Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.
We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.
So, to the men and women who answered the call,
In both times of war and peace, thank you.
.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
John McCrae

Tribute To HEROES
.
While the dogtag is used to provide information on an individual serviceman, I also believe that the chain which holds them represents a connection to all servicemen, no matter where you served, how you served or when you served.
.
The Minuteman in 1776 has a connection to the soldier fighting in Afghanistan today. That connection is every individual who has ever served in the United States Military. Each of us represents a link in the chain that connects that Minuteman of over 200 years ago to the soldier in Afghanistan today. SAMWolf

The great intangible of America's wars beyond logistics, beyond strategy, beyond wonder weapons and Generals, is the spiritual force of its fighting men and women - and that is the force that the USO so serves.

Written by David K.
aka Johnny Gage
In Honor of the fallen unknown:
There are soldiers in many places
For some, we're allowed to see their faces
For others, are required to stay hidden
and do the orders that they are bidden.
If a known, brave soul's life comes to pass
we're told who he is and that he's home at last
If a hidden one dies while he's doing the plan
he's known only to his family and not the average man.
He's on a covert mission, so we are told
He died a soldiers way, and his life was bold
He's a hero to us, in each and every way,
because he died protecting the U.S. of A.

Here is a look into my inner thoughts My serious ideas for some boycotts I cherish the rights for people to say What they believe, its the American Way Although some of their words might offend Their right to speak it I will defend I learned about this from Voltaire Freedom of speech should be everywhere
Here is a word for Barbara Streisand Written in Shakespeares very own hand When he wrote it he thought of you Yes it`s The taming of the Shrew |
And to Ms Julia Roberts Your sense of logic really hurts You should stick to what you know Playing the part of a high class 'ho |
And to Rosie ODonnell the know it all If I need your advice Ill surely call Here is a question just for you with your big toosh Why would you of all people hate a Leader named Bush |
I have things to say about Rob Reiner The old big fat liberal whiner I read a lot of the things that you said To me you will always be a Meathead |
Oh by the way, George Clooney Your comments prove you are a Looney Because you played a Doctor on TV An Actor you are, but not to me |
And how can I forget Sean Penn You prove you are dumb again and again I saw the movie Dead man walking I wish it were called Seans not talking |
To a great singer known as Cher Behind your voice is empty air When you speak it seems to me The best part of you was Sonny |
I also have words for Alec Baldwin About what youd do if Bush did win I have a good suggestion for you A long term trip to Timbuktu. |
Here is a note for Belafonte An aging singer from antiquity I read your words about Colin Powell I found them all to be most foul |
And to Martina Navratilova Its so bad but you came over I do not even like your stupid game And you are as ugly as your name |
Ill never forget Susan Sarandan I am glad that she aint commanding I like your looks and that you can act But that is all you do and thats a fact |
Just because you all make a good pay Doesnt give you the right to say Things that truly offend me And those in the Military Yes we have the right to speak I think our time is now unique For the rest of the world to know We are the 1 nation with our ducks in a row Many know you from the silver screen But there is another way you are seen Anti-American all of the time Ill never give you another dime. Here I am at the end of my thoughts Id like to see some more Boycotts These people make a lot of money While putting down the land of the Free - Radix |

Today's FEEBLE attempt at humor:
Mr. Jones patted his daughter's hand fondly, and told her,
"Your young man told me today he wanted you as a bride, and
I gave my consent."
"Oh, Papa," gushed the daughter, "it's going to be so hard
leaving mother."
"I understand perfectly, my dear," beamed Mr. Jones. "You
just take her with you."

Katharine Lee Bates wrote the words to the classic American anthem "America The Beautiful" after her trip to the summit of Pikes Peak in 1893.

Today's classic warship, USS Wolverine (IX-64)
Wolverine class aircraft carrier
Displacement. 7,200
Lenght. 500'0"
Beam. 58'1"
Draft. 15'6"
Speed. 18.0 k.
Complement. 325
Armament. none
The USS Wolverine (IX-64)-a side-wheel excursion steamer built in 1913-was originally named Seeandbee, a euphonious name based upon her owners' company name-the Cleveland and Buffalo Transit Co. She was constructed by the American Shipbuilding Co. of Wyandotte, Mich. The Navy acquired the side-wheeler on 12 March 1942 and designated her an unclassified miscellaneous auxiliary, IX-64. Conversion to a training aircraft carrier began on 6 May 1942; and the name Wolverine, commemorating the first ship of the name, was approved on 2 August. Wolverine was commissioned at Buffalo, N.Y., on 12 August 1942, Comdr. George R. Fairlamb in command .
As the Navy's first side-wheeled aircraft carrier, Wolverine was equipped to handle plane take-offs and landings, a vital duty that she performed for the duration of World War II. She contributed to the winning war effort in World War II by trainin g hundreds of pilots in basic carrier operations. During an inspection conducted by the admiral on 27 October 1942, she briefly flew the four-starred flag of the Commander in Chief of the United States Fleet and Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Ernest J . King.
Her task completed and the war over in the summer of 1945, Wolverine was decommissioned on 7 November 1945 and struck from the Navy list on 28 November. The ship was transferred to the War Shipping Administration on 26 November 1947 and sold later that same year for scrapping.

I had to sign on just to finally say thank you. I have lurked here for some time, and will continue to do so, but I did want to say that I like the information I am able to see here. I like what everyone here does for myself and my family who all support the military. It is much easier to sign on and post then I had imagined :)
