My imaginary friend just told me that a shape-shifter is an entity that has the ability to change form. ie. human changing into cat, cat turning into dog.

That is werewolves or "shape shifters"-- people that supposedly can turn themselves into any form of animal.

A shape-shifter is a were-creature, werewolf, wereleopard, etc, etc. There's a corner saloon where I live in which this happens every Friday night - perfectly normal folks around 5:00 PM, and by 9:00 it's the Star Wars cantina scene...

Watch an old movie called Wolfen. The character takes on the shape of a wolf during certain periods and kills people then turns back in to the man and doesn't remember killing. Kinda like Werewolf stories.
