Inside The Bali Bomb Factory
Daily Telegraph ^ | November 9 2002 | RORY CALLINAN and BRAD CLIFTON

THE mysterious mechanic known only as Amrozi maintains the facade of a religious and loving father, who earns extra money by sewing clothes.

But littering the work surface by his sewing machine are three mobile phone boxes – believed to have held the mobiles used to detonate the blasts of October 12 that killed more than 180 people in Kuta.

Also inside Amrozi's ramshackle workshop, in the tiny Javanese village of Tenggulun, are a 50kg bag of ammonium fertiliser and various bits of electrical equipment. Australian Federal Police forensic experts suspect a large quantity of ammonium nitrate fertiliser was used to make the bombs. Amrozi, who has allegedly admitted playing a role in manufacturing the bombs and owning a van used in the attack, was last night in custody at a Bali police station.

The leader of the joint investigation, General I. Made Pastika, said yesterday Amrozi had admitted wanting to "kill as many Americans as possible" in the bombings. He had expressed regret that most of the victims were Australians.

"According to this suspect, he hates Americans. He wants to kill as many Americans as possible," General Pastika said.

Amrozi, 35, has told police members of the syndicate behind the bombings "were not very happy because Australians were killed".

As investigators interrogate Amrozi in an effort to locate his accomplices, relatives and villagers in Tenggulun spoke to The Daily Telegraph about the man accused of helping to create the deadly bombs and transporting at least one of them to the site.

They painted a picture of a man with many faces – father-of-four, ladies' man, religious fanatic who lives with his aged parents in a ramshackle hut in Tenggulun, which is in Lamongan, central Java.

Amrozi's primary trade is motorbike mechanic. He has been married three times – his third wife has disappeared – and has a paradoxical reputation in his community as an extremely religious Casanova. His family yesterday seemed amazed that he could be involved in the Bali attack but inside his untidy workshop and house were a series of suspicious items.

Boxes of late model Samsung, Ericcson and Nokia mobile phones were left scattered on a sewing table.

Almost none of the residents in Amrozi's village own mobile phones as there is no reception.

Police are also investigating reports that Amrozi bought key bomb-making chemicals from two shops in Surabaya, seizing billing documents on Thursday.

Family neighbour Maftuhin remembered seeing Amrozi driving the white Mitsubishi L300 van suspected of being used in the bombing.

Maftuhin said alleged Jemaah Islamiyah leader Abu Bakar Bashir came back to Amrozi's workshop after giving a speech at a local religious school.

Police are now investigating the nature of Amrozi's confessed links with Bashir.

Australian police may never get to interview Amrosi.

AFP officers were not present at Amrozi's interview by Indonesian police.

These crazy Islmaists. They accidentally bombed a French tanker because they didn't recognize the different red white and blue flag.

Whoopsie, Islamists went BOOM in Bali killing a lot of Australians but they meant to kill Americans. We are dealing with idiots.

Yes, the French and the Dutch have red white and blue flags, but there's only one with this:

.

One of the wilder things going around was the semi-apology of the muslim terrorists for bombing the French tanker, they didn't recognize the differance between the French flag and an American one. DUHHHHHHHHH!!!

LOL! You might think that the snake on the Mexican flag or the stars on the US flag might tell them something...

I don't know. They really like us. They always are welcome in the Netherlands, are almost left unhindered by the police. And we even fund their mosques with state-money!

Our media is still denying that there are a lot of fundis here, or that islam is not so peaceful at all.

What more do they want?

...experts suspect a large quantity of ammonium nitrate fertiliser was used to make the bombs.

Sheeesh . . . every time I poop in a paper bag and light it on fire, it just gets slimyer and stinkier, hence no terrorists are ever harmed thereby !!!

But hey . . . wait just a darn minute . . . yeah, that's it . . . I'll simply tie up those camel flocking freeks and then force-feed 'em with my baggie products !!! Yeah . . . and that way no innocent people will be harmed, either !!! ;-))

Tah dahhhh . . . "Let's Roll"!!!

Well as you have said, the police are busy giving out speeding tickets. You have to keep your priorities straight.

Bali bomb factory found
By Rory Callinan in Bali
10nov02
THE giant bomb that killed almost 200 people at Kuta Beach was made in a boarding house just 10km from the bomb site.

Police have confirmed that Amrozi, the chief suspect from East Java, was seen in a room of the house, along with a group of other suspects before the October 12 attack.

The room is on the third floor of the cheap five-story boarding house, which is home mostly to nurses working nearby.

Yesterday the the $50-a-month room just off busy Gatot Subroto Street in Denpasar still contained evidence of implements suspected of being used in the bombing.

In one corner were four unopened packets of washing detergent -- a potential source of bomb chemicals.

Lying on the floor was an empty bag and a mobile phone handbook. Mobile phones were suspected of being used to detonate at least one of the three bombs on the night.

Neighbours said another man using the name of Jony and claiming to be from Surabaya in East Java booked into the 4m-square room six days before the bombing, but was rarely seen during the day.

Police in Surabaya have questioned the owner of a chemical shop where Amrozi was suspected of buying Chlorate forthe largest bomb.
