KARACHI: Raja Qureshi, chief prosecutor in the Pakistani case of slain US reporter Daniel Pearl, has resigned from his post for undisclosed reasons.

He submitted a letter late on Friday to the government announcing his decision to resign as the advocate general of the southern Sindh province, but he denied rumours the resignation had been prompted by written threats against him.

"Whatever the reasons are, I will give them to the authorities," Qureshi said in Karachi.

He helped secure the conviction of British-born Islamic militant Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, known as Sheikh Omar, and three accomplices for the murder of Pearl earlier this year.

Sheikh Omar was handed the death sentence and his three co-accused life in prison. Sheikh Omar has appealed against the ruling.

Pearl's dismembered body was found in a shallow grave in a Karachi suburb in May.

Pearl, who worked for the Wall Street Journal, was researching an article on militant Islamic groups in Pakistan with links to al Qaeda when he disappeared in Karachi in January.

I just heard on Fox News that he'd received death threats both by phone and by mail.

Wasn't this guy always receiving threats? What's new with that? Maybe he finally decided to clear out since Pakistan has been officially declared the new homebase for Al Quaida.

Omar will go free. I never had any hopes that Musharraf meant much of anything he said. Terror groups and extremists are safe, protected and taken care of in Pakistan.
