If Rice, like Powell, was wishy-washy on an issue like school vouchers, or capital gains tax cuts, or affirmative action, or ANWR drilling, etc. I'd still support her.

That certainly doesn't mean he wouldn't vote for Clinton. Heck, during the Trial of Shame (Impeachment Trial in Senate), Fred Johnson (R-Tenn.) voted 'not guilty' on one article and Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins (both Republicans of Maine) voted 'not guilty' on BOTH articles, just to name a few.
I have little doubt that in '92, and again in '96 there were probably hundreds, if not thousands of Republicans that voted for Clinton out of a total of some ~100 million total votes cast.
