Dean Barkley, an independent appointed to fill the expiring term of Paul Wellstone, took the oath of office on November 12, 2002. Barkley was born in Annandale, Minnesota in 1950, and graduated from Annandale High School in 1968. He earned a bachelor of science degree in business in 1972 and a law degree in 1976, both from the University of Minnesota, and practiced law at Palmer, Hanjani, Barkley and Barley until 1998.

Hey, the guy is only going to be a Senator for what, 36 days? I bet he's going to hold the modern day record for shortest tenure as a U.S. Senator.
Interesting...when he is retired from the Senate so will the LONGEST serving Senator: Strom Thurmond of South Carolina.
Anyway, I thought some fellow FREEPers might want to see this fellow's web site before it is forever gone.
I'm glad to be a

Does Dean Barkely get to hold all the priveleges that a regular Senator gets?
For instance, does he have the privelege of speaking on the Senate Floor even after his term ends?

Ventura should have just appointed a regular non-political guy like he said.

The shortest Senate term ever is
one day, served by Rebecca Felton in 1922. (I'd have linked to the Senate Web site but apparently it's being redesigned -- perhaps a manifestation of the change in power.)

Separated at birth-- Senator Dean Barkley and Nick Bakay?

He forgot to add that he's in office not contributing anything to the US Senate...Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. A little harsh, aren't we? Senator Barkley voted WITH the Republicans and Zell Miller to REJECT the Democrat Homeland Security bill today. That is a very positive move.

Mazybe they should've put his page on tripod.

Poor guy. Now that he's had a taste of it, he's going to spend the rest of his life running for either the U.S. House or Senate. (And splitting the Dim votes.)

Wonder what kind of benefit package Dean will get when he 'retires', probably a spectacular one.

Wonder what kind of benefit package Dean will get when he 'retires', probably a spectacular one. Ya know, I was wondering this myself - will he get the bitchin' Senatorial pension, etc?

I would like to add that dean barkley is my relative and a very good guy. he has not done anything wrong so quit slamming on him... jealous are yah? First off, that was not a 'slam', but a legitimate question/concern, that someone could get a temporary appointment but yet be eligible for millions of dollars in pension money paid for by the taxpayer. As someone who is usually a fiscal conservative like Barkley that should be a concern of his as well. Secondly, I have defended Barkley on several occassions, see Barkley is a Strict Constructionists! thread that I posted when he was first appointed. So I am not jealous or slamming the guy.
