These days, defining diversity seems to be the big issue on campus.
But at Amherst College in Mass. they are doing more than just talking about it.
They're adding 'diversity seats' to the 32 member Student Senate for groups that have been 'historically silenced.'
Five candidates representing different minority groups applied for the seats, including an international student, a homosexual, a Conservative (!!), a Latino, and an Asian.
All but one were chosen-the Conservative candidate.
Ted Hertzberg the conservative student says he deserved the seat for the same reasons the others did.

To think that I once believed that marrying a guy from Amherst College would be heaven (it was shortly after Julie Nixon and David Eisenhower married and I think I was easily impressed).
Worse yet--to think that I held this up to my own son as a "goal" college--what a disservice it would have been to his intelligence and waste of our money.

Reality mimics the arts...
Check out the "Liberal Crap" daily comic in at the University of Maryland, starting one 4/08 (Spring 2002 -- page 3).
It helps to read about the characters first, though.

Unbelievable. Then again, it's Massachusetts, right?

I bet O' Reilly and Hannity would be interested as well.

I guess that is an indirect admission by the dems (representing a diverse collection of minorities) that the conservatives are a majority and that algore couldn't have won the popular vote in 2000.

I love the 'categories' of disenfranchised minorities that are competing for Amherst College Senate representation.. Asians, Latinos, Blacks, Homosexuals, and CONSERVATIVES!

Dear Amherst Student Senate:I am sitting in the smallest room of my house.
I a reading a written report which I hold before me. I describes the Student Senate's decision to exclude conservative representation.
Soon this report and my feelings about you will be behind me.

I really enjoyed this post. Here's why.
When I was in college I applied for admission to a collegiate honoary (ODK), and as part of the process I had to write an essay on how I could make their organization more "diverse." Somewhat offended by this idiotic essay topic, I penned a perverse response that they should want me in their organization since I was a conservative and hence a minority on the campus.
Of course, they didn't let me in. I didn't care very much since I was already a member of Phi Beta Kappa, but I always thought my essay had everything to do with my rejection.

I wish.
I suspect, in actuality, I caused them to laugh heartily for the split second it took them to toss my application into the garbage can. I doubt they gave the arguments it contained the slightest consideration.
I will say this though. It was fun to stick it to them in any way, however small. Honestly, I didn't want to be part of any organization that would discriminate conservatives in such a fashion.
