[history]
WASHINGTON (AP) --Former Vice President Al Gore has decided not to run for president in 2004, a senior Gore adviser said Sunday.
Gore would have been the likely front-runner in the Democratic field, even though many party activists have said privately they hoped he wouldn't run.

My brother, an ardent liberal who has never voted Republican in his life, promised me last week that if 2004 was a Bush vs. Gore rematch, he would actually vote for Bush.
I'm trying to determine if Gore's stepping down is a good or a bad thing for the GOP. But, since Gore is such a bitter, divisive figure, his non-candidacy will probably better for America in general.

Dick Morris was on a local radio talk show and he said he didn't see how Gore would run in 2004. He said he'd rather go down in history as the man who was "cheated" than the man who was beaten.

It finally got through his thick, sweaty skull that the
Dems would merely be offering him up for sacrifice/slaughter by nominating him for '04. The smart Rats are waiting for '08 to run.

Dang! I'm eating crow on this one. I thought he would run for sure. He probably saw how much dough Clinton is raking in and the good time he is having and decided to do the same thing.
I think this is a bad thing. We needed Gore in there saying idiotic "us vs. them" things and shouting "I wanna fight for you!", blah, blah, blah.

Actually, this is a shame - first, I think W would have slaughtered Gore and it would have put to rest the line that "Gore won the popular vote, ya know"; second, it would have helped W in the coat-tails division by depressing Democrat vote and increasing the chances of a material Senate pick-up by the Republicans.
On the bright side, Miss Hillary will have to show her hand earlier because if a Dem (other than she) were to run and win, then she would be aced out for another 6 to 10 years (W's 2 and the winning D's 4 to 8); if Miss Hillary were to attempt to become the nominee, if would do at least three things: One, it would envigorate the Republican base like no other D could do; two, it would alienate many southern and bush country D's and they would at least vote R if not actually switch to Republican party; three, it would (probably) destroy Miss Hillary as a political force for the rest of her (and her husband's) un-natural lives.

Gore Will Not RunOne of the few headlines that send BOTH Freepers and DUers into feelings of depression.
Here freepers are thinking of a lost opportunity to trash the Dems again, over at DU, they're thinking of suicide 'cuz they really thought Gore could 'be re-elected' in 2004!

Yep, even Mondale won his own state (in '84).
....although it was the only state he won.

"Geez, I'm not
that stupid!" said Gore in a follow-up. "Who wants to get his head handed to him?" asked the former vice-president and senator.

dang!

Miss Hitlery has been eclipsed as the woman to watch in WA by Nancy Pelosi, who's possible candidacy seems to me to be a real possibility. I'll bet Nan and Hill scratch each other's eyes out in private.

Same here.
Part of me says that Dubya, if he keeps the keel of the ship-of-state even would
trounce Gore in 2004.
Conversely, my cynical side says that GORE 2004 would see such incredible vote fraud in
places like St. Louis, Atlanta, Wisconsin, South Dakota, etc...that Dubya
could easily be robbed.
All I can say is "Thank you Mr. Gore. You've just reduced the number of adversaries
that we need to prepare to overcome."

I'm sure in a week or two he will re-invent himself AGAIN and say he is going to run!

Gore must have finally faced reality.
