Those three biographies were interesting and impressive. Thanks for the posts. Now my question for you (or anybody else who cares to take a shot at it) is this: With this kind of talent available, why the
#@&% is Trent Lott still the leader?

Salier and Wolfe were DOA as far as winning any general election. Sorry, but that is the way it was. Frist was doing his job in sending the money to the most highly value added places. I can appreciate your grudge and respect it, but don't agree with it.Ganske was also DOA. He had very high negatives going into this thing. I believe Salier would have been a far more conpetitive candidate. I'm not saying he would have beaten Harkin but he would have had a better chance. I think Frist squandered his contributors' money. I thought that at the time and I still do.

Don Nickles BUMP! At least it looks like our neighbor, Senator George Allen, will now head the NRSC. ...crossing my fingers.

I didn't like Nickels going public with his views regarding Lott. It's ok to feel that way but he should keep it inside the caucus. It looks like he's just wanting Lott's job and will do anything (including harming the party) to get it.

Oh geez, this is going to be all about abortion now. At this rate, if Lott is dumped for Frist, there will be bitching that Lott was dumped because he didn't go all the way. Just why picking a majority leader should be based on his views on one issue (segregation aside) escapes me, but whatever. Lott will go for making a MISTAKE. He is not in favor of segregation and everyone knows it. He gets an F in history and communication, not in racial attitudes.
This can be all about whatever any given voter wants it to be about. Just chill with your "moralizing." Would you holler if someone was killing newborns? To people who view the baby the day before birth just as humanly as the day after birth abortion is JUST as outrageous. With the view that the baby is fully human before birth, how could you respect them is they did NOT make a big deal out of it.
Fine if you're a pro-abort. But just don't make YOUR case by whining about others making THEIR case.

Don Nickles, from all the reports I have seen, has simply called for a new leadership vote. In that, I think he represents the wishes of a large majority of Republicans.
There are only three real prospects to replac Lott: Nickles, McConnell or Frist. I personally would be very pleased with either Nickles or McConnell. But as I made clear on this thread earlier, I very much oppose Bill Frist; part of the reason being what he did to Bill Salier and all Iowa conservatives in the '02 primaries. It goes farther than Iowa,of course, but the hash they made of the situation there speaks volumes about what could come out of Frist leadership in '04.
IMO, now is the time for conservatives to exercise what little influence they have with the White House and Republican Senators to advocate for one of the good guys.
On a personal note, I miss talking to you regularly as we once did, my friend!
From everything I hear, our mutual good friend is getting his foundations laid in DC very well! :-)
Merry Christmas to you!

Torie, I must respectfully disagree with you. I think WV could have been competitive this election cycle and the groundwork could have been laid for the future. I promised EV that I would ask my mother-in-law to vote for Wolfe and she told me she was already planning on it. Furthermore, my brother-in-law and sister-in-law did the same. These folks knew little to nothing about Jay Wolfe, but they knew all they cared to about Rockefeller. They were looking for someone else. Granted, this is anecdotal evidence, but I think that if some money had been spent on publicity, it wouldn't have been wasted. Shelley Moore Capito was re-elected after all and she was thought at one time to be vulnerable.

Only Inhofe (my personal favorite for Leader) and Enzi get an "A". Smith from NH got an A+ from GOA

I'm going to sit back and watch the feathers fall. I'm all 'debated' out for now. But keep looking for info. I'm interested to see what you find.

It is the most selfish of acts of which I can conceive. Anyone who murders their own child is a monstrous and evil barbarian.

I don't think that Senator McConnell would run for the majority leader position. Kay Bailey Hutchinson is an embarrassment. She is barely pro-life and is definitely not a friend of the Second Amendment. Senator Nichols would probably do well. My biggest distrust of him is that he has been in the Republican leadership for a long time, and that leadership has served us poorly. If he were really that good a leader, why hasn't he influenced the other leaders to make better decisions. Dr. Frist is reasonably good on abortion and Second Amendment issues, but he's not a real leader of the right. In many ways, he's a mirror of President Bush. I don't know enough about Senators Santorum or Kyl to comment. Senator McCain would be a lousy majority leader, but the party might throw him that bone just to play politics. He seems to me to be in pretty bad health, and I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't really want it.

WHY DO THEY HAVE TO KILL THE BABY? The other great question is "What did the baby do worthy of death?" or just "What did the baby do?"
