I used to work for a Vietnam vet, a successful, well respected local businessman, very articule and "socially concious."

But he used to say point blank if he ever met Hanoi Jane he would kill her on the spot, life sentence be damned.

I would not do that myself, and I would try to prevent others from doing it, but I understand that kind of rage. Non-veterans have trouble understanding at times, perhaps because Fonda's fellow-travelers in the Hollywood/Madison Avenue Cultural Axis seldom provide a complete or even a representative account of her statements and activities in North Vietnam. She didn't just pose on an AAA gun and slobber on the Stalinist leaders, though that was bad enough. She made broadcasts, many directly addressed to American servicemen. She accused us of bombing civilians on purpose, said that we knew that this was policy, and urged us to mutiny. She essentially accused us of being war criminals; thereby justifying the torture and death that were more often than not the fate of those Americans who fell into the enemy's hands. Not one POW was returned from Laos after the war, from the hundreds missing there. Only a handful returned from South Vietnam. A few hundred came home from North Vietnam, possibly because the presence of international apologists and foreign embassies there allowed them to be used for propaganda.
I do not accept Fonda's apology either. Her attitudes and beliefs remain consistent with the position she took in North Vietnam all those years ago. Fonda is only one person. It is more important that her pronouncements, then and now, reflect the standard (indeed, stereotyped) worldview of the cultural elite in this country. There are millions of Fondas now, they are the Hollywood elitists, the academic post-modernists, the swarms of pop-culture conformists and suburban status-seekers who hang on their every word and count themselves superior for doing so. These people are not consorting with the enemy, they are the enemy.
