Woman Turns self in for Cruelty to Animals — (01/09/2003)

The Bell County Sheriffs department says a 74-year-old woman turned herself in Thursday (Jan 9) for dragging a dog behind her vehicle.

Elizabeth Jane Wood voluntarily came to the Sheriff’s office and provided a written statement explaining her actions.

She says on Monday (Jan 6) she put food and water in her vehicle for her dog. She then attempted to load her dog into her vehicle to transport it to the Temple Animal Shelter where she was going to tie it to a fence for the night.

Wood says she was going to go to the shelter and speak with officials to help her find a new home for it.

In her statement she says the dog had become aggressive and had killed a kitten. When she tried to put the dog in the back of her vehicle, it was too heavy to load. She then tied the dog to her vehicle and drove slowly to the shelter. The distance between her home and the shelter is approximately two miles.

When she arrived to the Temple Animal Shelter, she discovered the dog had been injured. She called her daughter for help, and her daughter called a veterinarian. Before an emergency veterinarian could be located, Temple Animal Shelter employees had already picked the dog up.

Subsequently the dog was put down once the Animal Shelter employees arrived.

From what I watched on T.V., it was played as if she turned herself in before she got into some serious trouble. It's kind of hard to hide a almost 3 mile long trail of blood on the payment, at least that is what witnesses were saying to the reporters.

I have seen this a couple of times. One lady tied her poodle to her corvette and forgot about it. She jumped into the car and was going to the local quick mart and somewhere remembered the poodle was behind tied. Lucky for her it was a bumpy curvy road and the poodle was really fast. All I had to do was treat the pads for road rash. The second was a redneck that had tied his horse to the back of the trailer and got distracted and took off for his next destination. Lucky for the horse he knew how to surf using his metal shoes. They were worn almost wafer thin. I suspect he surfed at least two miles on pavement. I treated him for a sore neck.

LOL, I had to check your profile to make sure you were a vet. Either that or one forgetful animal owner.

This fall I put on climbing gear, tied the rope to the hitch on my car and went up on the roof to clean gutters. Couple of days later my wife tells me about this guy that did this same thing only he didn't tell his wife he'd be using the car for an anchor. She hops in the car and drives off pulling hubby off the roof and dragging him down the road. Bad ending for hubby.

Next time I take the keys with me.

I'm amazed that the horse didn't break a leg on a pothole or crack in the pavement! Those are some darn lucky animals.
