Former Senator Gary Hart compared himself to Winston Chucrhill yesterday. 'I would love to be President,' he told reporters. 'I would have been a very good president. In many ways I would be a better one now.'
'Why now, he was asked? Why did Winston Churchill come back after 10 years out of office? Times change,' he replied.
David Lightman writes that Harts were politely recieved by a Capitol Hill crowd yesterday, but pointed out the lack of enthusiasm from the Democratic quarter for a Hart redux.
Hart has a January 22 Iowa visit scheduled.
Iowa supporters of the one time Democratic Presidential Candidate will meet with the former Colorado Senator this month in Des Moines to guage a 2004 comeback.
Iowa Democratic Sources and Insiders who helped run his previous campaigns say a gathering/reception prior to the 8 PM speech at the Iowa State University Memorial Union is intended to reconnect Hart with supporters who might be interest in a Hart campaign for next years caucuses.

I bet people like Hart, Kennedy, etc. feel really really stupid. All their lives the polsters told them "character matters" to the voters. Then Clinton got elected. Twice!!!
Hee-hee!!!

We can only hope that Hart runs, and makes a lot of noise, forcing legitimate Democrat contenders (if there actually are any) to respond to him.
It is truly amazing how the lure of the Presidency, with its great power, continues to haunt these men, causing them to do things completely at odds with logic and rationality. Consider Dick Gephardt, who has been running almost as long as Hart. I remember reading somewhere that in 1988 Gephardt drew $100,000 on his personal credit card to keep his listless campaign running for a few more weeks of ineptitude. There was no chance at all of success, but each day represents some sort of possibility that he could rise from the dead.

Times change The key words.
Translation: "When I was caught with Miss Rice, America was still in possession of some moral standards and committing adultery was considered to indicate weak character. However, the Clinton presidency has clearly demonstrated that poor character is no longer a political ball and chain and I think I'll give it one last shot."

Gary will find out when he gets to Iowa that all of his 'campaign workers' are living at the rest home!
