What a horrible loss! Why are there so many military helicopter crashes?

At the risk of speculation, I would say they were using night vision devices and not using running lights.

Two helicopters crash along Texas-Mexico border
FALCON HEIGHTS, Texas (AP) Two Marine helicopters went down overnight along the Texas-Mexico border and authorities did not expect to find any survivors. The crash of the AH1W Super Cobra helicopters occurred at Falcon State Park in far South Texas, near the Rio Grande.
Each helicopter carried a crew of two, officials said.
They said the helicopter crews were helping the U.S. Border Patrol in a drug trafficking case when the crash occurred about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The helicopter crews were based in Camp Pendleton, Calif., but were operating out of Fort Bliss, an Army Post in far West Texas.

Thank you. They are not saying it but it would seem as though it was a mid-air.

They said the helicopter crews were helping the U.S. Border Patrol in a drug trafficking case when the crash occurred about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. These choppers are equipped with very nice infra-red night vision gear, probably why they were being used for surveillance.
I am saddened by the loss of these fine, patriotic Marines.

I'm sure Tom is in DC still after more security/military
on our borders, which is obvisously needed......
Unless you want to fight/fund some halfast "war on terror"
for the next thirty years........did we finally win our
halfast, 30 year, "war on drugs"?
(thoughts & prayers to these Marines and their families,
and to all trying to protect our borders.)

Looks like the drug runners are taking over most of the
U.S Parks along the southern border.

Jim Miklaszewski, MSNBC, said the helicopters collided. They were part of Task Force 6.

It is likely that these troops were engaged in border defense/interdiction because the Treaty of Guadelupe(Mexiccan War) Hidalgo prohibited the use of US Army personnel in the border region. Since these Marines are "naval" personnel their actions satisfy the provisions of the agreement. Marines have been interdicting drugs on Mexican border for some time. Good thoughts and prayers to the families of the fallen. Semper fi Marines.
