An Iraqi man ran to U.N. officials in Baghdad yesterday, begging them, "Save me!"

But the multinational troops dragged the desperate man away and turned him over to Saddam Hussein's security police, leaving him to face an uncertain fate.

The incident was just one of several troubling developments in Iraq as the drums of war continued to beat.

"The incident sent a compelling message of indifference/powerlessness on the part of the UN inspection regime."

That is one possible scenerio I have considered. The scientists and their families have now seen how useless the UN really is. Would you risk your family based on the display the UN provided?

Thus, whether staged or real, this event summarily ends any possibility of an Iraqi scientist giving up the game.

True... and again the Useless Nations shows their incompetense in dealing with the worlds problems. Time for them to have the same fate as the League of Nations.

The way poor Elian was handed over to Castro was tragica nd criminal.

Here we have literally millions of illegal aliens walking in from Mexico, and then they had to have Reno's Storm Trooper with assault weapons break into an American home and kidnap a child to hand him back to Castro, in violation of the US law, which gives refugee status and permanent residency to Cubans who touch land.

Don't get me started on that.

Clinton and Reno deserve to burn in hell just for that.

I agree totally. There is a special spot reserved in hell for Reno and Clinton for that one.

I still think it was staged!

My reason is this - Iraq would like to have a legit reason to kick the UN out - what better reason than to try to stage a kidnapping.

If the UN had protected the guy - I'll bet that is exactly what Iraq would have done.

... kidnapping ...

Sometimes the truth is what's most obvious ... that he wanted to be saved from people who wanted to do him harm, and that he had information that if shared would put him in immediate danger....

Excuse me ... the notebook was empty - just what do you think the guy was trying to give to the UN ...???

Iraq wants the UN out of Iraq ... PERIOD! If they have to ACT or stage defections to get a reason to demand the UN leave they will do it. Iraq now knows that if U2 flights are allowed to continue, they will be exposed - because the flights will SHOW WHERE ALL THE WMD's ARE (I believe we already have this information, and the U2's would only show if some of the stockpiles have been moved from previous locations).

To me - this was an attempt to get the UN to overstep their bounds and assist an Iraqi (supposed to need help) - whom Iraq would then claim were innocent people that the UN had kidnapped.

I wish people would realize Iraq is in the business of deceiving and lying - which is all they have done for the last 12 years.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the situation:

Wolfowitz cites reports Iraq has infiltrated UN inspections team

All the news reports I have seen on FOX have said that the notebook was empty!

The Iraqi soldiers, who took the guy away told everyone that the notebook was empty.

And of course they never lie.

And of course it makes a lot of sense that a guy, who may have been a scientist, clutches an empty notebook inside his jacket, when he is trying to defect.

Sure, it makes a lot of sense that the notebook was really empty. (/sarcasm)

That wouldn't overstep the UN's boundary. The resolution provides for them to be able to talk to anyone, anytime and take anyone out of the country.
It may make you feel better, to think that the Iraqi guy attempting to defect was a plant, but judging from the circumstances, it is not only unlikely, but just about a zero probability.

That is not to say, that Saddam hadn't sent us defectors in the past, who were indeed plants, but if this guy had been a plant, the Iraqis would have arranged to make sure the UN takes the guy, instead of dragging him away. I trust you saw the pictures.

I saw the picture of the UN guy dragging the Iraqi guy away and giving him to the other Iraqi guys - NEVER did I see the Iraqi guys do anything but LEAD THE GUY AWAY - A F T E R the UN guys gave him up.

People should not be so gullible when someone yells "help" - especially in a country that knows nothing but lies and deceipt!

I wouldn't doubt that the silent scientists are now in dungeons, too, having been fingered as persons of interest by the UN.
